About the turntable lineup

The SL-1200G delivers against the central claim of Technics products – the Technics Definitive Sound, which is synonymous for the highest dedication towards music. Launched globally in 2016, the SL-1200G combined Technics‘ traditional analogue technology and advanced digital technology. Its outstanding performance literally rocked the hi-fi market and redefined the reference for direct-drive turntables.

Parts from the SL-1200G were newly developed to create the SL-1200GR/SL1210GR, such as the coreless direct-drive motor and precise motor control technology, high-rigidity platter and high-sensitivity tonearm. This ensures audio enthusiasts using the SL-1200GR can enjoy music with the rich, robust sound of analogue records.

The SL-1500C inherits the brand’s high-end sound quality concept and has a host of original Technics technologies, such as a coreless direct drive motor and high-sensitivity tonearm. To simplify the playing of analogue records, the built-in Phono EQ connects to a wide variety of devices, including the Technics OTTAVA wireless speaker range. The SL-1500C also comes equipped with a high-quality Ortofon 2M Red phono cartridge. The SL-1500C is a complete turntable system designed for a wide range of users, even outside of strictly dedicated audio enthusiasts.

Grand Class SL-1200G: Technics Definitive Sound

Overcoming analogue issues of the past

In conventional analogue turntables, sound quality was degraded by tiny vibrations of the motor and rotational speed fluctuations, known as ‘cogging’. However, by combining the knowledge and expertise gained as the originator of direct-drive turntable systems, the SL-1200G can eliminate this ‘cogging’ effect with a coreless direct-drive motor. Any potential minute motor vibrations are suppressed even further by high-precision rotary positioning sensors guided by a microprocessor-controlled system.

The SL-1200G provides the smoothest possible rotary control by the use of an encoder at the bottom of the motor which detects the precise rotating angle. Furthermore, a twin rotator construction reduces the bearing load while maintaining high torque and also limits minute vibration during rotation. This makes it possible to reproduce the warm sound and subtle nuances of musical expression engraved in analogue record grooves and craved for by vinyl lovers.

Broadcast industry beating three-layered platter

The SL-1200G has a three-layered construction consisting of a rigidly combined heavyweight brass and aluminium die cast platter, and deadening rubber covering its entire rear surface. This eliminates unnecessary resonance, achieving high rigidity and vibration damping. The smooth rotational stability and inertial mass even surpasses the Technics SP-10MK2, the direct-drive turntable standard used in the past by broadcast stations worldwide.

High dampening tonearm

The tonearm employs a lightweight magnesium material which has been cold drawn to improve the characteristics of the material and increase the dampening effect. Technics’ numerous listening trials have shown that magnesium is sonically superior compared to aluminium. In addition, high initial-motion sensitivity is attained by employing the traditional Technics gimbal suspension construction with the horizontal rotation axis and the vertical rotation axis intersecting at a single central point, as well as high-precision bearings using a cut-processed housing.

Supplied auxiliary weights support a wide variety of cartridges

One of the unique joys of analogue playback is being able to change the cartridge to match the music genre and feeling in order to enjoy different types of sound. The SL-1200G includes two different auxiliary weights to support a wide variety of cartridges. Combined with the standard balance weight which supports cartridge masses of 5.6-12g[i], the small auxiliary weight increases this number to 10-16.4g, while the large auxiliary weight supports cartridge masses of 14.3-19.8g.

Four-layered cabinet construction

A hairline-processed, 10-mm-thick top panel of immaculate aluminium has been added to the previous three-layered construction of aluminium die cast, Bulk Moulding Compound (BMC) and insulator feet consisting of absorbing, complex silicon-rubber – similar to the SL-1200GAE. This four-layered construction combines high rigidity and high vibration absorption, all with a premium finish and feel.

Grand Class SL-1200GR/SL1210GR: Rich, robust analogue music in a new standard Direct-Drive Turntable

About the SL-1200GR

The Grand Class SL-1200GR Direct-Drive Turntable System for audio enthusiasts is a standard model inheriting the technology of the SL-1200G, which was developed as a reference direct-drive turntable for the next generation.

This model is available in two designs – the silver SL-1200GR and the black SL-1210GR.

Coreless direct-drive motor achieving stable rotation

The SL-1200GR inherits the same design philosophy as the SL-1200G with the new development of a single-rotor, surface-facing, coreless direct-drive motor, resulting in the elimination of cogging. The SL-1200GR’s rotation control, which verifies and corrects the precision of the motor, uses the latest motor control technology cultivated in the development of Blu-ray devices, just as used by the SL-1200G. In addition, the electrical circuitry has been tuned to ensure the newly developed motor of the SL-1200GR achieves maximum performance.

Turntable Platter – pursuing rigidity and vibration damping characteristics

The platter achieves high-rigidity and vibration-damping characteristics by using a two-layer construction with deadening rubber applied to the entire rear surface of the aluminium die-cast. This eliminates the unnecessary resonance that is otherwise relayed to the record, thereby producing clear sound. To increase the inertial mass and to reduce vibration, the shape of the aluminium die-cast portion was optimised by simulation. At 2.5kg (including the rubber mat), the SL-1200GR platter is 0.8kg heavier than that of the previous SL-1200MK5. Also, the back surface of the platter features strengthening ribs to improve rigidity. Increasing the surface area of contact with the deadening rubber achieves damping characteristics that are more than twice as good as those of the SL-1200MK5.

Tonearm achieving high initial-motion sensitivity

With its gimbal suspension construction, the tonearm bearing section of the SL-1200GR uses a cut-processed housing that employs high-precision bearings, as in the SL-1200G. The high initial-motion sensitivity of 5mg or less is achieved through manual assembly and adjustment by skilled Japanese artisans. This enables the grooves etched into the records to be accurately traced. Gold-plated phono terminals and ground terminals for detachable cables are provided below the tonearm, so a wide variety of cables can be selected. Also, the use of metal shielding construction inside the case reduces the effects of external noise.

High-rigidity body and high-damping silicon insulators for beautiful sound and isolation from various vibrations

The SL-1200GR ensures high-rigidity by using a body with a two-layered construction solidly unifying the BMC and the aluminium die-cast chassis. For the insulators supporting the body, as with the SL-1200G, the SL-1200GR uses special silicon rubber that ensures both high vibration damping characteristics and long-term reliability. Vibration in the horizontal direction is absorbed by reinforcement with cylindrical tubes using microcell polymers. While inheriting the technology of the SL-1200G, the insulators have been modified to specifically suit the characteristics of the SL-1200GR.

SL-1500C Premium Class Direct Drive Turntable System: Technics sound quality concept and built-in Phono EQ

About the SL-1500C

The SL-1500C inherits the brand’s high-end sound quality concept and has a host of original Technics technologies, such as a coreless direct drive motor and high-sensitivity tonearm. To simplify the playing of analogue records, the built-in Phono EQ connects to a wide variety of devices. The SL-1500C also comes equipped with a high-quality Ortofon 2M Red phono cartridge. The SL-1500C is a complete turntable system designed for a wide range of users, even outside of strictly dedicated audio enthusiasts. The turntable is available in black or silver.

Coreless direct-drive motor achieving stable rotation

The SL-1500C inherits the same high-quality sound found in Technics’ high-end turntable models. It uses a single-rotor, coreless direct drive motor in which the stator has no core and eliminates the rotation irregularity called cogging. In this motor, the magnetic force of the rotor magnets was improved to the highest possible level, and the gap between the coreless stator and rotor magnets was optimised, thus achieving high torque performance equalling that of the SL-1200MK5 while eliminating cogging. Furthermore, the motor control was optimised in accordance with the platter weight. As a result, the SL-1500C has realised high rotation accuracy and high performance, and eliminated the need for parts replacement and maintenance.

High accuracy motor control

In the direct drive system, the motor is connected directly to the platter so that the motor rotation speed becomes the rotation speed of the phono record. Therefore, it is extremely important to control the drive motor’s rotation speed to ensure stability. The SL-1500C utilises the latest motor control technology refined through the development of Blu-ray disc products. Furthermore, the FG coil pattern of the full-circumference detection FG system was improved to achieve more detailed measurement of platter rotation speed.

Highly sensitive tonearm accurately reads the signal stored in the record groove

The tonearm, which is responsible for accurately reading the signal by tracking the groove on the phono record, is a static-balance universal S-shape tonearm, another Technics tradition. The tonearm tube is made of lightweight, high-rigidity aluminium. The bearing section of the gimbal suspension construction tonearm consists of a machined housing and high-precision bearing to provide high initial motion sensitivity.

Two-layer platter with improved vibration damping performance

The platter on which a vinyl record is placed features a two-layer structure with deadening rubber on the entire back surface to eliminate unwanted resonance in the aluminium die-cast platter. The platter offers high rigidity and outstanding vibration-damping characteristics to prevent harmful vibration from being transmitted to the record and therefore delivers clear sound.

High rigidity cabinet and high damping insulator for thorough shut-out of all vibrations

The aluminium die-cast chassis is rigidly integrated with a special material consisting of ABS mixed with glass fibre to achieve a two-layer construction. The combination of this special high-rigidity material and a metal chassis raises the rigidity and vibration-damping performance to higher levels, resulting in a robust cabinet for beautiful sound reproduction.
The insulator is comprised of a spring and rubber to provide optimal frequency characteristics. This not only assures high sound quality and superb howling resistance, but also effectively shuts out external vibrations under high sound level conditions.

Built in Phono EQ enables connecting to a variety of devices

The SL-1500C has a built-in phono equaliser amp compatible with MM cartridges so it can be connected to an audio product that does not have phono input terminals. The dedicated power supply for the phono equaliser is isolated from the power supply for the motor and control circuitry to reduce the effect of noise. Furthermore, the shield structure suppresses the effect of external noise. As a result, high-purity signal amplification is realised. Using the SL-1500C and the audio equipment you have, you can enjoy music from a vinyl record in high sound quality.

Phono Cartridge (Ortofon 2M Red) included

The supplied universal head shell is mounted with an Ortofon 2M RED cartridge. Thus, you can play a record immediately after purchasing the SL-1500C. The tonearm height can also be easily adjusted within a range of 6 mm to enable the use of various other phono cartridges. Using the auxiliary weight that comes with the product, a cartridge weighing 14.3 to 25.1 g (including the supplied head shell) can be used.

Auto lifter minimises wear on records and stylus

When the tonearm reaches the end of the record, the auto lifter automatically raises the tonearm. This prevents unnecessary wear on your valuable vinyl records and stylus, thus allowing you to enjoy playing records more comfortably.[ii]

SC-C50: Elegant wireless style and wide soundstage

The OTTAVA SC-C50 offers acoustic technologies that deliver clear sound across a remarkably wide soundstage. Space Tune calibration allows free speaker placement, and the system supports an advanced wireless music experience.

Four JENO Engines and LAPC

Technics’ original four JENO Engines produce optimal performance, with superior sound imaging through subwoofer, midrange, and tweeter alignment. LAPC measures the amp’s frequency amplitude phase characteristics with speakers connected to the unit, and performs digital signal processing to achieve the ideal impulse response. Parameters optimised for the low-frequency and high-frequency speaker load characteristics are pre-set in the LAPC computation circuit of the unit to realise ideal frequency and phase characteristics over the entire frequency range.

A compact body with powerful architecture

The arc-shaped body houses three midranges, three tweeters and one subwoofer, while left- and right-angled speakers and a centre speaker create rich stereo imaging and crisp vocals. A ‘directivity-control horn’ eliminates mutual speaker interference to achieve wide directivity, and a coaxial midrange and tweeter ensure vertical directivity with less frequency disorder from the compact body.

Three 1.6-cm tweeters deliver high-res sound up to 50 kHz. This combines with a front-firing 12-cm long-stroke subwoofer and a straight, large-diameter, long port. A total of seven units in the rigid, glass fibre body produce powerful sound from the 3.1-channel amplifier.

Optimal sound for any listening environment

To provide the OTTAVA SC-C50’s excellent sound in every room and listening position, Space Tune optimises the listening environment to the sound space. In addition to offering three preset modes to suit the mounting location, a microphone built into the main unit enables an Auto function to optimise the sound from the main unit or a smartphone app with a single touch.

SC-C30: A compact body offering a wide soundstage

In the SC-C30, a wide soundstage is achieved through the positioning of two 6.5cm woofers, two 1.6cm tweeters and one 12cm subwoofer within the arc form body. In the front surface of the body, the long-stroke subwoofer combines with a large-diameter long port to produce tight, punchy bass sounds while the tweeter features a unique acoustic lens that provides wide directivity. By placing these speaker units in optimal positions, a powerful, expansive sound is produced from a compact system.

Exceptional sound quality, perfectly calibrated

For hi-res audio enthusiasts, clarity is key. To ensure the SC-C30 delivers every nuance and detail found in Hi-Res Audio, the model has an exceptionally wide-ranging frequency response. At its heart is a state-of-the-art fully digital amp equipped with three of Technics’ ground-breaking JENO Engines. These are vital for ensuring each audio channel is perfectly aligned in terms of signal timing. Also on board is LAPC, which cleverly matches the sound to the characteristics of the internal loudspeakers. By harnessing these unique Technics technologies, the SC-C30 ensures listeners can enjoy a full-bodied, warm sound in exceptional detail rather than the clipped, overly bright sound associated with inferior digital amplifiers.

Sound quality is not just about power and clarity; sonic imaging is equally important and in order to ensure that it delivers a perfectly optimised sound, like its stablemates the SC-C70 and SC-C50, the SC-C30 uses Technics’ Space Tune room calibration software to produce a sound image that is perfectly balanced regardless of the shape and layout of the listening environment. For quick and easy setting, Space Tune also features a number of presets that can be chosen using the Technics Audio Center App.

The diaphragm consists of a newly developed composite performance film laminated with special materials to achieve high rigidity and high internal damping. The result is a powerful bass that seems to soar from the bottom depths and a spatial ambience that makes the listener feel as if they were in a concert hall.

To maximise the effect of these characteristics, the shape of the diaphragm was designed with utmost attention to detail. The bullet-shaped dome has improved rigidity. The natural and linear high-frequency characteristics provide a smooth and lustrous sound. The rib edge shape was optimised through simulation to attain high linearity across the entire input range.

Air Control Precision Structure

Detailed simulation and fine tuning achieve a structure that results in optimal air flow. The two carefully designed ports and original construction create an accurate air flow to bring out the wide-range frequency reproduction capability from the driver.

High-Resolution audio quality with Bluetooth® and LDAC technology

Fast response and high definition are achieved wirelessly; reproducing High-Resolution Audio when High-Resolution content is transmitted with the LDAC codec at a maximum transfer rate of 990kbps. When connected via Bluetooth®, LDAC supports up to 96 kHz/24 bits and apt-X HD supports up to 48 kHz/24 bits (high-res reproduction when connected by cable).

Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling – three modes

The hybrid noise cancelling system combines two different systems to realise high noise-reducing performance – a feedforward system which uses a mic mounted on the outside, and the feedback system which uses a mic located near the driver positioned close to the ear. A three-level mode selector allows noise cancelling effects according to the situation – from the high level required on an aeroplane to a low level to reduce background noise.

Smart, seamless operation with wearing playback sensor

When the headphones are removed from the wearer’s head, music stops. When they are put back, music resumes.

Ambient sound enhancer

This function lets you listen to background sounds, such as announcements made on a train or in an airport by simply touching the outside of the housing, without removing the headphones from your head.

Voice assist activation

This function activates voice assistance, such as Siri in the iPhone. By speaking, you can make a phone call, select a music title to play[i] in linkage with a music streaming service or check the weather or route guidance.

3D ball joint mechanism and stylish design

The ball joint mechanism allows three-dimensional movement of the headphones’ ear cuff to fit the ear at a comfortable angle. The shape of the ear pads is ergonomically designed and low-resilient polyurethane foam is used inside the pads to ensure a snug fit around the ears. The ear pads offer increased isolation and sound insulating performance as well as extra comfort.

The headphones have a high-grade appearance, styled in aluminium, with a spin finish and a laser-engraved and coloured Technics logo mark. A ‘swivel & fold’ mechanism makes them easy to carry and store.

[i] When using a music streaming service, it may be necessary to link the voice assistance to the account or subscribe to a flat-rate service.

The 4:2:2 10-bit format has approximately 128 times the information of 4:2:0 8-bit and is capable of expressing over 1 billion colours. This massive volume of colour information is highly valuable in post-production, making it possible to adjust colour dynamically and radically and even turn daylight scenes into nighttime scenes. Leveraging the expressive power of a full-frame camera takes 4K video to exciting new places.

High reliability and expandability to support professional work

5-Axis Dual I.S. 2 supporting up to 6.5 stops

Panasonic’s 5-Axis Dual I.S. 2 offers excellent stability in a range of situations. A high-precision gyrosensor joins the Dual I.S. system of 5-axis in-body stabilisation and 2-axis optical stabilisation in selected lenses for highly accurate shake detection and compensation. This makes it possible to use up to 6.5 stops[vii] slower shutter speed in both photo and video. Incredibly stable performance can be achieved when shooting handheld at much slower shutter speeds and ISO values, reducing the need to carry a tripod, gimbal or Steadicam rig. The electromagnetically-driven shutter system provides quiet, steady shooting.

High product reliability that allows unlimited video recording[viii]

Panasonic has focused its expertise in heat management to develop and incorporate a cooling fan in the LUMIX S1H that efficiently disperses heat.  This allows the camera to deliver non-stop video in every recording mode, supporting every type of long form video shooting, including documentaries, interviews and events.

The S1H fan has different settings. For example, AUTO1 starts the fan soon after shooting begins, to keep heat down and facilitate longer shoots. AUTO2 uses the fan only when necessary. Ultra-quiet performance, rugged design, and low vibrations for minimal effect on the image stabilisation system are other features that complement this new structure.

The tough body takes challenging shooting environments in its stride. The magnesium alloy full die-cast frame is highly durable, while sealing protects every seam, dial, and button, as well as the fan. The camera is dust and splash-resistant[ix] and designed for use at temperatures down to -10°C. The durable shutter unit will withstand around 400,000 releases.

The LUMIX S1H is equipped with two high-speed SD Memory Card slots, supporting UHS-II SD Cards and Video Speed Class 90. The 7.4-V 3,050 mAh high-capacity battery (with a long recording time of approximately 2 hours in all recording modes[x]) can be quickly charged via USB PD (USB Power Delivery), using the bundled USB3.1 Type-C cable for high-speed data transfer.

Expandability for creative freedom

A HDMI Type A terminal is provided, with a cable lock holder for extra security. Time Code IN/OUT synchronisation is available via the flash synchro terminal and the bundled BNC converter cable. This streamlines the non-linear editing of footage shot with multiple cameras.

A variety of accessories can be used in common with the S1R and S1 – including a Microphone Adaptor (DMW-XLR1), Remote Shutter (DMW-RS2), Eyecup (DMW-EC6), Battery Grip (DMW-BGS1) and Battery Charger (DMW-BTC14). MIC, LINE and CONDENSER MICROPHONES are switchable. The DMW-XLR1 allows professional microphones to be connected for best audio quality. The Battery Charger also complies with USB PD and enables quick power charging in approximately two hours. The camera can be used while charging via the Battery Charger adaptor. The Panasonic External Flash (DMW-FL580L / FL360L / FL200L) can also be mounted on LUMIX S Series cameras.

Field work is also streamlined with Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy connection and secure 5GHz Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11ac) providing convenient remote control and sharing with other devices, and fast data transmission. Lumix Sync for iOS/Android devices enables photo transmission to a smartphone or tablet via easy wireless connection. It also allows remote control of the camera using a smartphone or tablet. Lumix Tether software enables tethered shooting. Users can control the camera by connecting it to a PC via USB. Images can be viewed on a large PC screen while shooting, which is helpful in commercial photoshoots of portraits, products and so on, where continuous confirmation is required.

High operability for intuitive control

Three large, high-resolution displays for smooth confirmation of images on the spot

The 3.2-inch, 2,330K-dot in 3:2 aspect touch rear monitor is enhanced with approximately 150% higher luminance for excellent visibility in outdoor shooting, compared with the LUMIX S1R/S1. The brand new multi-hinge design both tilts and rotates so that users can easily change angles without unplugging cables such as HDMI or USB. Other useful features include Live View Boost, which boosts sensitivity so the user can check compositions in the dark. Night Mode puts a red cast over the viewfinder and/or the LCD display, so the photographer’s vision is not affected when shooting night scenes.

The new high-resolution Status LCD is the largest in its class at 1.8 inches. Adopting MIP (Memory In Pixel technology) for low power consumption, it is ideal for always-on use even when the camera power is off. It shows the recordable time for video, number of images, remaining battery and other major settings on a black/white switchable background. The backlit screen ensures high visibility and the fast response supports time code counting and audio monitoring.

The S1H uses the LVF (Live View Finder) introduced in the S1R/S1, to support ultra high-speed response, minimum distortion and high optical performance. The LVF boasts the world’s highest 5,760k-dot resolution. The high-speed OLED technology delivers a smooth 120 fps display, a minimum time lag of less than 0.005 sec and an exceptional 10,000:1 high contrast ratio. The 0.78x magnification ratio can be switched to 0.7x or 0.74x, an excellent feature for glasses-wearers who can adjust the magnification in order to see the full frame.

Convenient customisable Fn buttons are located on the front of the S1H. The new sub video button is intuitive, so in a confined space, or where a rig blocks access, it is easier for operators to start and stop recording.

Impressive still camera performance

High Resolution mode and HLG Photo mode

The S1H offers High Resolution mode and HLG Photo[xi] mode to take full advantage of the high-resolution sensor’s exceptional ability to produce highly detailed, true to life images.

High Resolution mode will be welcomed by studio photographers who want to produce enormous billboard-sized prints without losing detail, utilising sensor shift technology. It captures and combines eight consecutive images in-camera for outstanding results – from reproducing the delicate colours of natural landscapes to intricate fine arts for archival images. It produces a 96-megapixel equivalent (12,000 x 8,000-pixel) RAW and/or JPEG image.

HLG Photo delivers a wider dynamic range that ensures more natural contrast. This format enables compatibility with HDR displays, preserving the brightest highlights and deepest shadows. The user can playback these vibrant images as HSP[xii] files on the latest Panasonic HLG-compliant 4KTV via HDMI cable connection or on other HLG-compliant devices. HLG Photos can be produced as an HSP file with compressed high-brightness signals in full resolution (5,888 x 3,312 in 16:9).

High-speed, high-precision AF system

Panasonic has achieved high-speed AF with its advanced control technology incorporating the major devices – lens, sensor and imaging engine. The lens and sensor communicate at a maximum 480 fps. Contrast AF with DFD technology allows the LUMIX S1H to achieve an ultra high-speed, high-precision AF of approximately 0.08 sec[xiii]. The LUMIX S1H also boasts high speed burst shooting at 9 fps (AFS) or 6 fps (AFC). It also excels in low-light shooting, with -6EV[xiv] luminance detection performance in Low Light AF, thanks to the higher sensitivity and optimised tuning of the sensor.

The high-precision shutter unit operates at a maximum 1/8000 second. The external flash can be synchronised with the industry’s fastest shutter speed of a maximum 1/320 second[xv]. The Highlight Weighted Light Metering Mode meters light with the priority on highlighted parts, to prevent them from washing out.

Panasonic’s face/eye detection technology makes it possible to capture people in crisp focus, with the Eye AF capability detecting the pupil of the eye in precise focus for impressive portrait shooting. The S Series also incorporates Advanced AI Technology that detects specific subjects – humans and fast-moving animals. The camera keeps tracking these subjects even when they are not facing the camera.

Panasonic releases LUMIX camera firmware update for LUMIX S1R, S1, GH5, GH5S, G9, G95, G85 and GX9

Panasonic has announced the availability of firmware that will further enhance the performance of its innovative LUMIX digital single lens mirrorless camera lineup – including the LUMIX S1R and S1 full-frame models; and key cameras in the popular G Series range.

The firmware will be available for download at the LUMIX Global Customer Support website https://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/ at 11:00am AEST on 9 July, 2019.

Scott Mellish, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic, said: “These powerful additions enhance the precision of an already exacting feature set. On launch, the S Series offered class-leading Dual I.S. 2 (Image Stabilisation) at 6 stops for the first time in a full-frame camera.  With the upgrade, it will support an additional half stop for 6.5 stops of image stabilisation, delivering handheld shooting at even slower speeds and ISO values.”

“We’ve also introduced an innovative new function to improve the photographer’s control over AF – AF-ON Near Shift and AF-ON Far Shift. Assignable to a function button, this capability allows the user to confidently guide AF by refocusing on a subject closer or further away than the camera’s current AF position.”

“Without using the touch screen, or taking their hand away from the camera, they can alternate between subjects for precise AF when there are a number of potential targets.  This is a boon for professionals – from videographers capturing events where there are large groups of people; to still photography of birds, where you want to avoid placing the focus on a foreground branch or leaf, and push into the depth of a scene without manual AF adjustment.”

Panasonic launches new Soundbar range for an impressive cinematic experience

Panasonic has unveiled its latest Soundbar range, bringing Hollywood-quality sound into Australian homes for outstanding cinematic entertainment.

Panasonic’s 2019 Soundbar range boasts state-of-the-art features including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X™ and Chromecast, as well as 4K and HDR Pass Through capability – ensuring this year’s collection is Panasonic’s most musically refined to date, and allows listeners to totally immerse themselves in their favourite content.

The flagship HTB900 Soundbar is designed to match the company’s latest TV line-up and is tuned by Panasonic’s acclaimed Technics audio specialists. It brings every movie to life, delivering a sound field that heightens acoustic realism. With support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X™, powerful, dynamic sound takes listeners right inside the cinematic experience.

Selected models in the range offer increased connectivity to stream music around the home with seamless control, via built-in Chromecast which works with Google Assistant. In addition, 4K Pass Through allows today’s high-definition 4K video content to be passed through a Soundbar from a 4K source (e.g. PVR or UHD Blu-ray deck) to a 4K TV.

Aaron Waters, Product Marketing Manager, Audio and Video, Panasonic, said:

“Panasonic’s flagship Soundbars pair with our Atmos-enabled TV and Blu-ray offerings, to provide consumers with the best solution to create their very own ‘Hollywood to Home’ experience.”

“The state-of-the-art technology incorporated in this year’s range allows viewers to be truly immersed in whatever content they are watching – movies, shows or sports fixtures – and enjoy a sensory experience like never before. Our aim is to bring those nail-biting scenes and tear-jerking moments to life for viewers, and our 2019 home entertainment range makes this possible while blending seamlessly into any living space.”

In 2019, Panasonic has also introduced an updated range of Blu-ray players, micro and mini systems and Bluetooth headphones.

Panasonic 2019 audio releases

SOUNDBARS: HTB900, HTB700, HTB510

At the top of the range, Panasonic’s flagship HTB900 Soundbar has been carefully crafted for both realistic and powerful sound to complement the visual performance of the company’s OLED TVs, as well as delivering refined and magnificent reproduction of a wide range of music.
Panasonic has kept the modern Australian smart home in mind, with Google Assistant compatibility allowing hands-free playback control when paired with a Google smart speaker.

The HTB900 and HTB700 are Panasonic’s first Soundbars to feature Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the latest object-based audio formats that deliver the most immersive soundstage possible. Combined with Panasonic’s speaker system, the solution offers powerful, dynamic sound. When watching movies, the sounds of voices, objects and music come to life and viewers feel as though they are inside the action.

Also supporting 4K and HDR Pass Through, the HTB900 and HTB700 allow content to be transmitted from a UHD Blu-ray player, straight through the Soundbar to a 4K TV, performing the required processing for optimal performance while watching UHD movies.

In addition, the HTB900 and HTB510 include built-in Chromecast to provide an effortless, wireless entertainment experience.

Panasonic’s 2019 Soundbars have been designed to integrate perfectly with the company’s 2019 TV range and surrounding spaces, harmonising with the interior of any room.

High quality speaker systems

Tuned by acclaimed audio specialists Technics, the HTB900 delivers the most refined sound possible. Tapping into the expertise of renowned audio engineers and designers, Panasonic’s flagship Soundbar delivers audio that perfectly complements the visuals so the user feels a genuine sense of acoustic realism.

The HTB900 can produce a powerful soundstage from even the most sonically demanding movie soundtracks. It boasts a substantial 505W of power, which is shared among six 6.5cm mid-range speakers positioned across the face of the unit and a High-Res Audio compatible tweeter on each end. The HTB700 achieves 376W output via a total of three 6.5cm mid-range speakers positioned across the face of the unit.

Both the HTB900 and HTB700 feature redesigned enclosures and cones, while the low frequency range has been extended in the main unit. This fine-tuning has improved the clarity of vocals, allowing users to hear all dialogue through the main unit, so they can view content without any distraction.

The rigidity of the HTB900 and HTB700 has been increased by adopting a honeycomb rib structure, using a long port within the cabinet, and by increasing the thickness of the components. Any vibrations which might cause sound quality degradation have been suppressed, resulting in clearer audio.

Connectivity supporting seamless integration

The HTB900 and HTB510 include built-in Chromecast to provide effortless, wireless and coordinated entertainment. Allowing the user to easily stream their favourite music services, radio or podcasts from a smartphone or other mobile device, Chromecast delivers a truly accessible experience.

Using multi-room sync, the same song can be played in several rooms – or different music can be played from room to room – on integrated Chromecast devices. Since the data is streamed directly to the Soundbar from the router, there is no degradation in sound quality.

If a Google Home or other Google Voice-activated speaker is networked to the HTB900, Google Assistant can be used to operate music playback and other features. Voice commands can be used to play podcasts and streaming services such as Google Play Music and Spotify.

Panasonic develops LUMIX S1H full-frame mirrorless camera with cinema-quality video and world’s first 6K/24p recording

Panasonic is proud to announce the development of the LUMIX S1H, a new Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera equipped with a full-frame image sensor. It is the world’s first camera capable of video recording at 6K/24p[i] (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/30p (16:9 aspect ratio), and 10-bit 60p 4K/C4K[ii].

The LUMIX S1H combines professional-level video quality with the high mobility of a mirrorless camera. A prototype will be exhibited at the “Cine Gear Expo 2019”, the premier annual event for professionals engaged in the technology, entertainment and media industry, to be held at Paramount Studios in Los Angles, U.S., through May 30 to June 2.

The camera will be available in Australia in Spring 2019.  Local pricing will be announced closer to the release date.

Since the 1990s, when Panasonic first began developing video recording capabilities for digital cinema, the company has produced a host of innovative technologies for impressive cinematic imagery.  These include 24p video recording, slow motion video using a variable frame rate, and the wide dynamic range and color space of V-Log/V-Gamut.

The design of the new LUMIX S1H takes advantage of this vast expertise. It packs all of these technologies, especially in the field of digital signal processing and heat dispersion, into a compact, lightweight body to achieve both high performance and nimble mobility. This new camera opens the door to creative film production in ways that conventional, bulky camera systems simply cannot do.

The key features of the new LUMIX S1H are as follows:

1. High resolution up to 6K for multiple formats

By maximising the use of the pixels in the full-frame image sensor, the LUMIX S1H, as a digital camera, has achieved 6K/24p (3:2 aspect ratio) or 5.9K/30p (16:9 aspect ratio) video recording for the first time in the world. It is also the world’s first full-frame digital interchangeable lens system camera to enable 10-bit 60p 4K/C4K video recording. It accommodates a variety of recording formats, including 4:3 Anamorphic mode, to meet professional needs. Shooting in 6K enables higher-quality 4K output, and the ability to crop, pan or further stabilise in post-production while maintaining 4K resolution.

2. Rich gradation and a wide color space rivalling those of cinema cameras

The LUMIX S1H features V-Log/V-Gamut with a wide dynamic range of 14+ stops, in line with the dynamic range of the Panasonic Cinema VariCam, to precisely capture everything from dark to bright areas. Subtle gradations such as skin tones are faithfully reproduced. Designed with consistent color management in mind, the S1H’s recorded footage is compatible with V-Log footage recorded by VariCam or V-Log L footage recorded by the LUMIX GH5/GH5S, enabling an easier post production workflow.

3. High product reliability that allows unlimited video recording[iii]

Panasonic has focused its expertise in heat management to deliver non-stop video in every recording mode. This makes the S1H beneficial for every type of long form video shooting, including documentaries, interviews and events.

Panasonic technology expertise

Panasonic has been working with film creators for over a quarter of a century to design and develop a number of cinema cameras, which has resulted in stunningly high video performance. The LUMIX GH1 made its debut in 2009 as the world’s first Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera capable of full-HD AVCHD video recording.[iv] The LUMIX GH4 was launched in 2014 as the world’s first Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera[v] capable of 4K video recording. And in 2017, the LUMIX GH5 was released with the world’s first 4K/60p, 4:2:2 10-bit 4K/30p recording capability[vi]. The LUMIX GH5 is highly acclaimed by film creators for its high performance, excellent mobility, and superb versatility in film production.

Panasonic releases world’s first standard zoom lens with constant F1.7 aperture: LEICA H-X1025*

*As a digital interchangeable lens for a mirrorless camera, as of May 31 2019

Panasonic has released the LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH. (H-X1025). First previewed at Photokina, the new G Series interchangeable lens features a constant F1.7 aperture, covering the wide to standard zoom range.

The equivalent of five prime lenses in one, the H-X1025 delivers photographers the advantage of quickly moving from an ultra-wide to a medium focal length without changing lenses.  The new lens will be available in Australia in August, priced at $2799 RRP.

Scott Mellish, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic, said:

“Professional G Series users will enjoy this highly versatile lens.  It delivers excellent video and stills performance, and will be a welcome addition to their kit, providing exceptional results across a range of daily shooting requirements.”

“It will have high appeal with professionals shooting in fast-changing assignments such as weddings.  The H-X1025 offers the prime lens benefit of a fast aperture in low light, combined with the versatility of a zoom lens.  Videographers don’t need to stop to change lenses, so they can quickly adapt to capture great footage in different lighting scenarios from cutting the wedding cake to the best man’s speech.”

The addition of a focus clutch mechanism enables instant AF/MF switching and accurate manual focusing. This is another boon for video shooting, with the benefit of consistent and repeatable focus moves.

The LEICA H-X1025 boasts a large F1.7 aperture throughout the entire 20-50mm (35mm camera equivalent) zoom range and delivers exceptionally high optical performance.  A clickless aperture ring provides smooth, seamless aperture control. Adding to its capabilities, the lens has a rugged, splash-resistant design[i], a durable metal mount, and is freeze-proof down to -10° Celsius.

The lens system comprises 17 elements in 12 groups with three aspherical lenses and four ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses that suppress axial and magnification chromatic aberration, as well as spherical aberration and distortion. The use of aspherical lenses and the lens system design results in a compact, lightweight lens with outstanding optical performance. The filter diameter of the lens is 77mm, and it has a nine-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

The LEICA 10-25mm lens is compatible with the LUMIX G sensor drive at 240fps to take advantage of the high-speed, high-precision auto focusing. Silent operation is achieved by the inner focus drive system, and a stepless aperture ring and the micro-step drive system in the aperture control section allow the camera to smoothly catch up to brightness changes when zooming or panning.

[i] Dust and Splash Resistant. To avoid damage when using lens under these conditions, it must be used in accordance with the associated instructions in the manual.
