Panasonic Announces New LUMIX GH7, Mobility Meets Mastery

Panasonic is proud to introduce the LUMIX GH7 – a stunning new flagship LUMIX G Series Camera into the Micro Four Thirds mirrorless family.

The GH Series pioneered the video hybrid camera category in response to the demand for high-quality video content with exceptional portability, and the series has always broken new ground for world-first technologies. The GH7 is no exception, newly equipped with Apple ProRes RAW[i] internal recording and world-first 32-bit float recording[ii] directly into video files, which eliminates the need to adjust sound recording levels during shooting.

The LUMIX GH7 delivers outstanding video performance, wide dynamic range with a newly developed 25.2MP BSI CMOS sensor and improved AF performance with the inclusion of on-sensor PDAF (Phase Detection Auto-Focus).

Further enhancing flexibility for video creators, Panasonic is proud to introduce a new SFU3 Software Upgrade Key (sold separately) compatible with both the LUMIX GH6 and LUMIX GH7. This unlocks a new log profile for the LUMIX range by allowing video creators access to ARRI’s LogC3[iii],  providing seamless colour matching with ARRI’s digital cinema cameras. The image processing of the ARRI LogC3 curve on the LUMIX GH7 has been certified by ARRI for the implementation of this function. The option for Log recording, which provides rich colour information and wide dynamic range, has been expanded to include ARRI LogC3 in addition to the conventional V-Log, further improving LUMIX’s workflow compatibility.

Aaron Waters, Product Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic said: “The GH Series has been pioneering the video hybrid category since 2009. Since that time, in collaboration with our GH community we have developed many sought-after features and the GH7 is no exception. With the inclusion of internal ProRes RAW and the world’s first 32-bit float internal recording[iv], the GH7 sets a new benchmark in workflow for the video producer. It vastly improves the quality that they can capture in-camera as a single or small crew operator. The optional ARRI LogC3 provides creators with access to cinema ARRI looks, a streamlined workflow and the ability to use the LUMIX GH7 alongside ARRI digital cinema cameras in high-end productions.”

The LUMIX GH7 will be available in Australia in July 2024 from leading photographic retailers.

LUMIX GH7 Main Features

1. High performance, fast response, and excellent mobility

  •  25.2MP BSI CMOS sensor with high resolution and fast response, along with 13+ stop dynamic range boost with rich gradation.
  •  Adopts PDAF for fast and reliable AF, with advanced AI subject recognitions with the ability to track Humans (Eye, Face, Head, Body), Animal (Eye, Body), Motorcycle (Helmet, Bike), Car (Body, Grill/Helmet), Train (Cabin, Body) and Airplane (Nose, Body). These modes are easily selected and switched via the AF mode button.
  • Improved image stabilisation technology, including perspective distortion correction for videos and High mode in Active I.S. to enable powerful compensation when shooting on the move.

2. Enhanced video quality and optimised workflows from shooting to post-production

  • Internal recording in 5.7K 30p ProRes 422 HQ and ProRes RAW HQ.
  • World’s first 32-bit float recording , eliminating the need to adjust audio recording levels during shooting when using the new XLR microphone adaptor, DMW-XLR2 (sold separately).
  • Allows users to load original LUT files and apply new colour looks directly to videos and photos with REAL TIME LUT.
  • Enables proxy recording for workflow efficiency and supports native Camera to Cloud integration with Adobe’s Frame.io, enabling images and videos to be automatically uploaded, backed up, shared, and worked on jointly via the cloud.
  • Open Gate recording to allow flexible framing for any social media platform or client needs.
  • Recording to USB-C SSD allows for the seamless offloading of large media files within short time. This is supported by the release of a new DC-Coupler (DMW-DCC18GU) with a regulated USB-C Power Delivery cable, which allows the camera to be powered via USB such as portable power packs, while freeing the camera’s USB-C port for data extending recording time.

3. Reliable in the video production field

  • Unlimited video recording made possible with efficient heat dissipation processing and the integration of a cooling fan .
  • Convenient tilt-free angle monitor that does not interfere with HDMI or USB cables when tilted.
  • Able to withstand harsh environments with dust and splash resistance , and freeze-resistance down to -10 degrees Celsius.

4. Seamless integration with ARRI Cinema Cameras

  • Video data shot with LUMIX GH7 in ARRI LogC3 can easily be converted to your favourite look. The ARRI Look Library contains 87 high-quality ARRI Looks to choose from. It is also possible to store the LUT package for 709 conversion (ARRI Look Library LogC3 to Rec709 3D-LUTs) in the LUT Library of the LUMIX GH7, and combine it with the REAL TIME LUT function to capture videos with ARRI LUTs straight out of the camera.
  • Using the ARRI Look Library (log-to-log), you can colour grade videos recorded with ARRI LogC3 and apply the desired ARRI Look within the log space. Additionally, by using the LUT package (ARRI_LogC3_v1-2_LUT_Package) you can convert the colour space of various display devices, allowing you to output the ARRI Look according to the desired colour space in SDR and HDR.
  • The LUMIX GH7 can easily match colours in shooting situations where cinema cameras, such as the ARRI ALEXA Mini, are used as the main camera. Furthermore, when DMW-SFU3A is installed, ARRI LogC3 in the LUMIX GH7 employs a curve that conforms to the standard sensitivity of ISO 800 of the ARRI camera. As the gamma curve does not change depending on the ISO sensitivity, users can use the same editing workflow no matter which ISO they shoot at. It also enables recording at ISO Auto, which is unique to mirrorless cameras.
  • ARRI LogC3 recording can also be used on the LUMIX GH6 in the same way as the LUMIX GH7 by using the SFU3 Software Upgrade Key, excluding the REAL TIME LUT function which is not available on this model.

  • Beard/Hair/Body Trimmer Kit – fitted with a wide blade, this trimmer kit is specialised for speed when trimming head hair or other larger areas. The length can be adjusted by 0.5mm increments from 0.5mm to 30mm. Four additional optional attachments available to purchase separately include:

Panasonic Announces Major Firmware Update Bringing New Features to the LUMIX S5II and S5IIx

Panasonic has announced a significant firmware update for its full frame mirrorless LUMIX S5II and S5IIx cameras that improves the shooting experience and enhances sharing functionality for both images and videos.

In line with LUMIX’s continuous commitment to supporting creators, the S5II Firmware V3.0 and S5IIx Firmware V2.0 deliver efficiency in both production and post-production workflows, providing important time (and therefore cost) saving benefits.

Aaron Waters, Product Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic, said: “LUMIX continues to exceed customer expectations by offering meaningful firmware updates to its cameras. These latest updates bolster our popular S5II and S5IIx cameras with new features and improved performance due to our continued product development. This is all at no cost to users, while adding value to their investment in the S Series.”

“The LUMIX S5II/S5IIx enhancements include updates to AF (autofocus) and IS (image stabilisation) technology first seen in the G9II, new partner developments with Adobe’s Frame.io and the inclusion of requested features from the LUMIX user communities, including proxy recording and high speed pre-burst capabilities.”

The S Series firmware will be available to download free of charge from the LUMIX Global Customer Support website: https://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/ at 11am AEST (UTC 1:00 am) on 22 April 2024.

S5II Firmware Version 3.0 / S5IIx Firmware Version 2.0

  1. Enhancement of Production Workflows

New Native Camera to Cloud Integration with Adobe’s Frame.io

Compatibility with Frame.io Camera to Cloud is now supported, enabling images and videos to be automatically uploaded, backed up, shared, and worked on jointly via the cloud. Recorded content is sent to the Frame.io platform through an internet connection via Wi-Fi or USB tethering, enabling seamless sharing of captured photos (JPEG/RAW) and Proxy videos. This empowers creators to receive remote real-time feedback during capture and enables collaborative editing among production teams using their preferred creative software. Frame.io Camera to Cloud streamlines the workflow from shooting to editing, enhancing overall efficiency in the creative process. These capabilities are ideal for wedding videographers who provide same-day highlight videos, or event photographers who work with a social media team.

Proxy Video Recording

This new feature records a low bit-rate proxy file when recording video. Simultaneously recording a proxy file that is linked with the original video recording enables faster delivery from production to post.

  1. Improved Basic Performance

Real-time Auto-focus Recognition (Animal Eye, Car, Motorcycle Recognition)

The improved real-time auto-focus system enhances the highly accurate Phase Hybrid auto focus of the S5II and S5IIx, efficiently recognising people amongst multiple subjects. It also features an animal eye recognition function, to focus on and follow animal eyes, as well as a car and motorcycle recognition function, which is ideally suited for shooting motorsports.

Enhanced E.I.S. (Electronic Image Stabilisation) Performance

In addition to Standard, High mode is newly added to the E-Stabilisation (Video) function, which electronically corrects large shakes when shooting on the move. Perspective distortion correction has also been added to correct the distortion that tends to occur during video shooting when using a wide-angle lens. Combined with Active I.S. Technology, it is now possible to achieve even more stable footage.

  1. Expanding Creative Options

Super High Speed (SH) Pre-burst Shooting

This new function records bursts before shooting begins. When set to the SH PRE mode, the camera begins burst shooting from the moment the user half presses the shutter button, allowing retroactive burst shooting up to the moment the shutter button is pressed down fully.

  • Other trademarks and trade names are those of their respective owners.
  • All functions may not be available depending on the situation.
  • Design and specifications are subject to change without notice.
  • Frame.io, the Frame.io logo, and Camera to Cloud are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Adobe in the United States and/or other countries.

Panasonic introduces the world’s smallest and lightest* medium-telephoto fixed focal length macro lens: LUMIX S 100mm F2.8 MACRO (S-E100) L-Mount Lens

Panasonic is pleased to introduce the new LUMIX S 100mm, the world’s smallest and lightest* medium-telephoto fixed focal length macro lens, weighing approximately 298 grams and featuring a new optical design and a newly developed Dual Phase Linear Motor.

Aaron Waters, Product Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic said: “This new lens is impressively engineered. At 298 grams and just 82mm tall, it is around half the weight and two-thirds the height of many other 100mm macros. Enjoy macro magic in the palm of your hand, with 1:1 life-size magnification allowing you to capture stunning close-ups in intricate detail.”

This lightweight, compact design allows for unrivalled mobility and flexibility in a variety of shooting scenarios. Benefitting from a new focus mechanism, the lens achieves superior tracking performance with fast and precise autofocus. In addition to close-up life-size photography with its 100mm focal length, the new lens produces the impressive portraits that are unique to medium-telephoto lenses, using its large aperture to capture images in high-resolution with stunning bokeh.

Moreover, the lens operates silently, thanks to the new linear motor, and focus breathing is suppressed, making it ideal for capturing video. It also offers micro-step aperture control for smooth exposure changes, as well as the ability to choose between linear or nonlinear focus ring settings. These features have become the hallmark characteristics of LUMIX S Series lenses.

The lens will be available in Australia in early February 2024 from leading photographic specialists.

Handheld In-Camera High-Resolution Capture for LUMIX S5II and S5IIX now available with latest Panasonic firmware release

The newest firmware update for the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX will see them become the first full frame mirrorless cameras to feature handheld in-camera high resolution capture with motion correction for images of 96 megapixels (MP)[i]

This capability further expands the scope of landscape and commercial shooting, allowing photographers to benefit from the 24MP sensor’s low light performance, while also being able to capture impressive 96MP still images of landscapes and streetscapes. The latest updates demonstrate the ongoing LUMIX commitment to continuous improvement of current S Series full frame cameras via regular firmware releases, at no cost to users.

In the same way as the LUMIX G9II and GH6, the handheld mode includes advanced computational photography technology that analyses motion during the image capture and intelligently processes in-camera to produce a higher resolution image. Photographers can then view a 96MP RAW and/or JPG file, without requiring any proprietary software.

With the firmware update, Panasonic has also increased the shutter speed range for High Resolution mode to a maximum 8 seconds, for enhanced results when capturing slow shutter scenes such as waterfalls or nightscapes with light trails.

Improvements have also been made to the general user interface based on user feedback, with the addition of the AF scope function for wildlife photography, and improved MF Assist with magnification up to 20X.

The firmware update will be available at the LUMIX Global Customer Support website https://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/ at AEDT 12PM on 24 October 2023.

Key updates – S5II Firmware Version 2.2 / S5IIX Firmware Version 1.3

・AF-Point Scope function

AF-Point Scope has been added to magnify the focus position during AF.

High Resolution Mode

Shutter speed at high resolution mode can now be set to a maximum 8 seconds with long exposure noise reduction applied. Thanks to the image stabiliser, [Handheld High-Res] mode has been added to enable recording pictures with higher resolution even when shooting without a tripod.

Panasonic and Reclaim Energy announce exclusive partnership to bring new energy efficient hot water solution to Australian market

Panasonic Australia and Reclaim Energy have announced a partnership to launch a CO2 hot water heat pump solution in the Australian market, delivering consumers energy savings, as a cost-effective alternative to gas and electric hot water heating.

The installation pairs Panasonic’s CO2 Heat Pump technology with Reclaim Energy’s hot water system design solution and will be available to both the residential and commercial market in December 2023.

Reclaim Energy has over 20 years’ experience in providing leading-edge, environmentally friendly hot water systems. Panasonic has a long history of innovation in the Heat Pump market and has been the long-term number one market share holder in Japan. By combining the expertise of Reclaim Energy and Panasonic, Australian consumers will be delivered the latest innovation in CO2 water heating solutions.

L-R: Paul Reid, Managing Director, Panasonic Australia and Chris Taylor, Managing Director, Reclaim Energy.

Chris Taylor, Managing Director, Reclaim Energy said: “The focus of our business is to allow householders to have a greater level of control of their own energy consumption and management, while contributing to net zero emissions.”

“We’re pleased to partner with Panasonic.  They are known as an innovative and trusted air conditioning provider in Australia and have sold hot water heat pumps in overseas markets for over 20 years, so we are excited to be working with them to bring this solution to the local market.”

Paul Reid, Managing Director of Panasonic Australia, said that the company’s global mission was to help humanity live well while reducing environmental impacts for the benefit of future generations, and that the local partnership with Reclaim aligned with this goal.

“Panasonic understands that we’re all searching for ways to overcome the environmental and societal challenges we’re facing in today’s world. We want to support Australians who are looking to make more sustainable choices, lower their energy costs and replace outdated water heating solutions. Panasonic has installed approximately two million hot water heat pumps in the Japanese market, and we’re very pleased to be rolling this technology out locally here in Australia.”

Heat Pump operation and benefits

The Panasonic CO2 Heat Pump is up to 5 times more efficient than gas or traditional electric heating and can quickly and safely heat water up to 80 degrees Celsius, making it suitable for both residential and commercial use. The refrigerant it uses has a low global warming potential (GWP).

The heat pump uses a heat exchanger to collect heat from the air outside to use as energy for the refrigerant and transfers energy from the hot refrigerant into water to produce hot water. The Panasonic product has an industry leading Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 6.1. This means that for every unit of electrical energy used, 6.1 units of heating energy is produced, resulting in reduced CO2 emissions compared to conventional water heating via electricity or natural gas.

The heat pump and storage tank are designed to be installed externally, for example at the back or side of a free-standing home. They operate quietly and have a small footprint.

Chris Taylor explained: “We are committed to energy efficiency through innovative, interactive, and customised environmental hot water solutions. With the ability to use up to 80% less energy compared to traditional electrical hot water systems, and to combine with existing renewable energy installations, the financial and sustainable benefits are significant.”
