LUMIX presents Australia-first 72-hour filmmaking challenge

LUMIX is on the hunt for keen filmmakers to demonstrate their creative expertise with a $20k winners’ prize pool on offer

Panasonic has unveiled its first ever LUMIX 72-hour filmmaking challenge, inviting Australian filmmakers to showcase their creativity, talent and storytelling expertise. Welcoming all entrants, from passionate amateurs to hybrid content creators, the competition will give 10 filmmakers just 72 hours to script, film, edit and submit an original short film.

To be part of the inaugural “LUMIX 72-hour filmmaking challenge”, entrants must first create a 30-60 second video to demonstrate what makes them the perfect candidate for the challenge. Ten successful applicants will then be loaned the newly-launched LUMIX S5IIX and supporting equipment to create a three-to six-minute short film and trailer. The film must include a special theme that will be unveiled to the shortlist simultaneously at a video briefing to kick off the contest.

Applications for the shortlist are now open and will close on 26 June 2023.

To participate in the LUMIX 72- hour filmmaking challenge and for key dates and FAQs visit: www.lumix.com.au/72-hour-filmmaking.

Following the 72-hour challenge, finalists will be invited to present their work to a judging panel including leading industry professionals at an exclusive showcase event in Sydney. The films will be judged by criteria that will recognise creativity and originality, cinematography and the smooth and unique integration of the theme into the short film.

The overall winner of the 72-hour challenge will receive a prize package including more than $10,000 RRP of LUMIX imaging products plus $5,000 in cash. A People’s Choice Award will also be determined by a live poll during the event, with the recipient enjoying a prize package of more than $5,000 RRP in LUMIX imaging products. Finalists will also receive flights to Sydney, tickets to the showcase event, and a night’s accommodation.[i]

Aaron Waters, Product Marketing Manager, Imaging at Panasonic explained: “LUMIX is excited to provide this opportunity to support Australian filmmakers and encourage them to showcase their creative talent and ingenuity, regardless of their level of experience. With our newest LUMIX camera in hand, they will have a tool that can support the demanding 72-hour format, with pro-level video and streamlined workflow to get them past the post!”

“This challenge celebrates the art of storytelling through the lens. It is a platform for established and emerging filmmakers to demonstrate flair, collaborate with like-minded enthusiasts and celebrate each other’s work. It is testament to our commitment to fostering innovation and we are excited to witness filmmaking passion shine.”

Panasonic launches new ‘Elite’ 6-Blade Shaver

Introducing the ES-LS9A Elite 6-Blade Shaver, delivering impressive results with every shave

Panasonic has unveiled its expanded premium performance Shaver range with the launch of the ES-LS9A – the brand’s first 6-Blade Shaver, delivering a clean and close shave every time. The new Shaver speaks to Panasonic’s long-standing success in the personal care industry and reinforces its commitment to delivering innovative, premium shaving solutions to Australian men.

Advanced technology delivers fast, smooth, close and comfortable shave

The ES-LS9A Shaver integrates six advanced Japanese blades designed to tackle all beard types. Based on the art of Samurai sword-making traditions, the blades are constructed with surgical-grade stainless steel to ensure that even after years of use, they maintain their sharpness while minimising irritation and redness to the skin. The two new thick stubble blades coated with titanium, two finish blades, and two lift blades are designed to cut more hair in a single pass. The tapered blade tips increase the height of the beard capture area and ensure that long, flat-lying and tricky hairs are handled with ease. The ES-LS9A’s durable inner blades are nano-sharpened to a 30-degree angle, allowing cuts to be made as close to the root as possible for a smooth, irritation-free wet or dry shave.

The ES-LS9A builds upon the success of its predecessors, featuring a 22D Flexible Shaver Head with a new floating blade mechanism, so that users can seamlessly follow the contours of their face and neck. The mechanism moves the six blades in 22 independent directions – both vertically and horizontally – so each stroke covers a greater area and cuts quickly and cleanly, reducing the overall burden on the skin. The Shaver also integrates an ultra-fast linear motor with advanced mag-lev technology, delivering 84,000 cross-cutting actions per minute to help cut through all facial hair thicknesses. The linear motor also guarantees there is no loss of motor speed, even when handling the thickest of beards and when battery charge is low.

The ES-LS9A’s Responsive Beard Sensor Technology precisely detects facial hair thickness and density at a rate of 220 times per second. This revolutionary technology allows the Shaver to boost power where beard growth is heavier, reducing the amount of pressure placed on the skin. Available in a smart matte black finish – complementing any bathroom counter with its simplistically sleek design – the ES-LS9A also comes with an Auto Cleaning and Charging Station to thoroughly clean and sterilise the Shaver after every use. The dock automatically removes any beard clippings or sebum caught within the Shaver while charging the unit simultaneously.

In addition to the ES-LS9A, Panasonic has also announced the release of its ES-LT2B and ES-LT4B Shavers. Both models feature 39,000 cross-cutting actions per minute to power through thick beard growth and minimise skin irritation. They also feature an ergonomic design with three independently moving blades that precisely follow facial contours and provide a gentler shave. The ES-LT4B also has a 2D head with directional (left and right) movement to reduce the number of strokes needed for a close shave. Consumers can enjoy stylish design and a modern colour palette, with the ES-LT2B available in matte black or white, and the ES-LT4B featuring red or blue colour options.

Chasnyn Ousmand, Product Marketing Manager – Personal Care at Panasonic Australia said there is strong consumer demand for hassle-free solutions that promote self-care and wellness. “In recent years, we have observed how Australian men are taking greater care of their personal hygiene, grooming and style. Personal care is becoming less taboo, and consumers are more attentive to their appearance and overall wellbeing. Naturally, they are searching for products that deliver high-quality results consistently,” said Chasnyn.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this personal care evolution with the launch of our ES-LS9A 6-Blade Shaver as part of our extensive range. This release in partnership with Shaver Shop, combined with the launch of our ES-LT2B and ES-LT4B models, will deliver greater choice, convenience and flexibility for Australian men.”

The ES-LS9A, ES-LT4B-A841 (Blue) and ES-LT2B Shavers are available exclusively at Shaver Shop stores. The ES-LT4B-R841 (Red) is available from Shaver Shop and all participating consumer electronics retailers.

Panasonic delivers clean air and comfort with new HZ Series

Ultra Premium range delivers superior performance and functionality to the Australian market, with stronger air purification than ever before.

Panasonic has unveiled its latest range of reverse-cycle, wall mounted split system residential air-conditioners, delivering industry-leading comfort and peace of mind with the latest in 24-hour air purification technology. This latest HZ Series builds upon the success of Panasonic’s Premium Reverse Cycle series, providing top of the range efficiency, design and an operating range to meet the demands of the extreme Australian climate.

The HZ Series incorporates Panasonic’s new nanoe™X Generator Mark 2 air purifying system, providing stronger and more effective air purification. The new range inhibits pollutants more effectively by releasing twice as many hydroxyl radicals than its Z Series predecessor (9.6 trillion/sec versus 4.8 trillion/sec).[1]

The nanoe™X air purifying system provides 24-hour purification in the home, to neutralise pollutants and deodorise interiors even when the cooling or heating system is not in operation. Nanoe™X benefits include the neutralising of bacteria and viruses, active deodorisation, inhibition of mould growth and allergens such as pollen or pet dander, and the breakdown over time of potentially harmful substances that can be found in particle sizes as small as PM2.5. At the heart of any air conditioning system is comfort – and the HZ Series has this at the forefront of its offering, to ensure an optimal sleep environment in homes of any size.

This new Series includes a Humidity Sensor which measures and analyses the humidity level and adjusts accordingly to maximise comfort levels in the home. Additionally, the unit incorporates iAUTO-X, a one button option for a fast cool down. An updated AEROWINGS design – with larger blades that provide 19 per cent increased airflow and long distance cooling up to 15 metres – also ensures a wider area of coverage, making the new solution perfect for larger rooms.

The HZ Series also includes the latest in device connectivity, with built-in Wi-Fi allowing for convenient control and monitoring anytime, anywhere through the Panasonic Comfort Cloud app, as well as through Google Assistant enabled devices.[2]

The advances in technology do not stop there. The HZ Series features Panasonic’s ECO Mode, harnessing the power of AI to both monitor the room conditions and amount of heat generated at any given time, and adjust settings accordingly to maximise energy savings by up to 20 per cent[3] – while maintaining a pleasant environment.

Reggie Lam, Product Marketing Manager, Air Conditioning at Panasonic Australia, said: “We know that Australians rely on air conditioning units to provide them with optimum comfort in the home, no matter whether cooling or heating is the requirement of the day. But with the latest in innovation – such as our new nanoe™X Generator Mark 2 technology, enhanced device compatibility and increased climate control options – we know that our new ultra-premium HZ Series will take both comfort and air quality to the next level.”

The new HZ Series Ultra Premium Reverse Cycle Wall Split range is available from Panasonic Air Conditioning specialist dealers from February 2023, with a full five-year part and labour warranty.

Benchmark LUMIX S Series Cameras unveiled: S5IIX and S5II deliver Phase Hybrid AF and Active IS

LUMIX S5II & S5IIX Hybrid Full Frame Mirrorless CamerasThe new LUMIX S5IIX and S5II embody Panasonic’s strategy of developing hybrid full-frame mirrorless cameras that offer a significant step forward for ambitious creators who demand uncompromising performance free of capture and workflow constraints.

Aaron Waters, Product Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic, said: “The new cameras are a serious evolution in performance. Key capabilities that will be a powerful attraction for today’s committed enthusiasts include a new 24.2MP sensor and a new processor born from the Panasonic and LEICA L2 Technology alliance. This makes possible Phase Hybrid AF and Active IS for reinforced command over subject tracking and stabilisation. Other features that expand the videographer’s horizon include unlimited 4:2:2 10-bit C4K/4K recording achieved via a fan and high-efficiency heat sink; full-sensor video shooting; and REAL TIME LUT for on-the-spot colour grading without postproduction.

“LUMIX has a loyal community that has benefited from continued enhancements to the range. The improvements to the AF system will further encourage adoption by first-time mirrorless buyers, allowing them to enjoy the capabilities that LUMIX has to offer.”

Each camera has an individual style, with the LUMIX S5IIX sporting a LUMIX-first monochromatic all-black look, while the S5II features the signature LUMIX design with red and white accents. Both offer an impressive feature set, with the step-up S5IIX offering a range of pro-level video features pre-installed, including HDMI RAW video data output, USB-SSD, ALL-Intra and ProRes recording, and wireless and wired IP streaming.

  1. Professional-quality photo/video performance for unlimited expression

Panasonic has developed a new 24.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor that features on-sensor PDAF (Phase Detection Auto-Focus). Under the L2 Technology alliance formed by LEICA and LUMIX, both brands co-invested to develop a new imaging engine that has approximately 2x higher-speed signal processing for high bit-rate video recording and improved high burst rate photography.

Aaron Waters explained: “LUMIX has taken the accuracy of Depth From Defocus and the smart subject detection of AI and added Phase Detection to offer high performance auto focus, in both photo and video modes.

The new PDAF has 779 focus points, and with the new generation processor, provides total AF confidence and a strong ‘lock’ on the subject.”

With the adoption of PDAF, the AF system has evolved into Phase Hybrid AF. Advanced subject detection and metering technologies lock on, track and capture the target subject in focus in a range of shooting situations – from fast moving sports or multiple subjects; to vlog style content such as talking to camera in a studio or holding up an object to the camera; and backlit or low illumination environments. Major improvements to the AF performance for overall reliability when shooting at 24fps will make the cameras a go-to for You Tube content creators.

With an increased buffer memory size, the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX are capable of impressive high speed burst shooting at up to 30 fps (AFS/AFC) with an electronic shutter in JPEG/RAW.

Another game-changer delivered with the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX is the new Active I.S. This builds on Panasonic’s history of innovation and reputation in the image stabilisation field by determining the status of camera shake and optimising horizontal, vertical, and rotational correction ratios. The system can compensate for significant camera shake in video recording, approximately 200% more when compared to the LUMIX S5[i]. It is highly beneficial in challenging situations, such as handheld filming while walking without using a gimbal, long-shutter handheld shots such as night-time or moving water, and telephoto fixed-frame shots. The cameras also offer Dual I.S.2 with a high-precision 5-axis gyro sensor for stills shooting.

  1. A variety of video functions and recording options

The LUMIX S5II and S5IIX are built for the videographer who desires freedom from restriction. They introduce 4:2:0 10-bit 6K (3:2) to the S Series, which makes it easy to crop for multiple aspect ratios (16:9, 9:16, 1:1) from the same source footage while maintaining resolution. For example, when you take a 9:16 vertical image out of 6K footage you still maintain a greater than 4K vertical image which can be viewed on mobile devices.

The cameras’ new and extremely compact active heat management system delivers unlimited recording in all environments while not adding extra bulk to hamper the photographer, providing free rein in the field[ii]. The 14+ stop V-Log/V-Gamut capture offers a high dynamic range, consistent colour management and streamlined post-production. In addition, with in-camera colour grading via REAL TIME LUT, creative scope is increased while workflow is reduced – excellent for repeatable setups such as content creators who work in the same studio or are looking to repeat the same style in camera instead of applying the same LUT in post.

The new cameras provide 4:2:0 10-bit 6K (17:9) / 5.9K (16:9), unlimited 4:2:2 10-bit C4K/4K recording capability[iii]. HFR (High Frame Rate) in C4K/4K (48p), FHD (120p), Slow & Quick motion in C4K/4K(1-60fps) / FHD(1-180fps), and 4K HDR video recording are also available. 4K 60p Time Lapse video can also be produced in-camera. The exposure is automatically adjusted to prevent large changes in brightness between adjacent frames, allowing smooth daytime to nighttime time lapses to be created. Practical tools included are Waveform Monitor, Vector Scope, Zebra Pattern, System Frequency (24.00Hz), Synchro Scan, Fan mode and a control panel for quick menu selection.

By using the optional XLR Microphone Adaptor DMW-XLR1 and the 3.5mm input jack/built-in microphone, users can capture four channels of audio, reducing the need for external audio recording devices.

  1. Excellent operability and functions to enhance workflow

The small size of the new S Series cameras and the lenses available means a low-impact kit, and no compromise on performance with a wealth of capabilities designed for a superior shooting experience. AWB Lock keeps the white balance set in auto, while Sheer Overlay can now be used in Creative Video mode footage sequences. Live Crop allows digital zooming and panning on the 6K sensor in a 4K video recording, making it easy for a creator to add smooth motion without having to move the camera.

In a step up from the S5, the new, larger 3,680K-dot OLED LVF (Live View Finder) has a magnification ratio of approx. 1.52x / 0.76x (35mm camera equivalent). A versatile, bright free-angle 3.0-inch LCD rear monitor (3:2 aspect, 1840K-dot) with touch control allows for quick changes to settings, even when both the HDMI cable and USB cable are connected, or the user is in front of the camera.

The Live View Composite Mode[iv] takes away the guess work, allowing the photographer to set the desired exposure, take the shot, then view the image on the screen as it is being exposed in real time. Once they are happy with how the shot looks, they simply hit the shutter button again to stop the exposure. This mode is also great for light painting, shooting light trails and other long exposure scenarios.

The drive dial now includes a setting for 96-megapixel High Resolution Mode. In this mode the camera captures 8 images in quick succession, with small movements of the sensor between shots to capture extra resolution. There is no requirement to stitch images using software as the camera combines the shots into one image. This mode also features motion compensation, further expanding the use of High Resolution Mode in general photography.

  1. Impressive quality, performance and connectivity

The LUMIX S5II and S5IIX have been designed to offer dependable video recording in real-world conditions and have a new heat dispersion mechanism combining a small fan and high-efficiency heat sink. As a result, they achieve continuous video recording[v] in C4K 60p, while the camera body remains conveniently compact. Users can shoot worry-free, whether capturing extended recordings or livestreaming. To withstand heavy field use, the cameras have a magnesium alloy full die-cast body and are splash/dust-resistant.[vi]

The LUMIX S5II and S5IIX support USB 3.2 Gen 2 for high-speed writing and readout. The dual SD Card slots (UHS-II x 2) offer a choice of Relay Recording, Backup Recording or Allocation Recording modes, with the card access indicator now located inside the card slot cover.  Videographers will be thrilled that the cameras have a full HDMI Type A terminal, offering a more robust connection without the need for adaptors. For external microphone connection, a Φ3.5mm input jack is provided as well as a headphone jack.

Content sharing with smartphones is streamlined using Bluetooth 5.0 Low Energy connection, Wi-Fi 5-GHz (IEEE802.11ac) and 2.4-GHz (IEEE 802.11b/g/n). With an always-on Bluetooth connection, a smartphone can act as the camera’s remote control via the LUMIX Sync app. The settings of the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX can also be copied and transmitted wirelessly to other S5II and S5IIX cameras when using multiple cameras.

The cameras are compatible with LUMIX Tether applications which enable tethered shooting via USB. Users can control and view multiple cameras by connecting them to a PC. For live streaming, LUMIX Tether for Streaming (Beta) with LIVE VIEW mode is available. LUMIX Sync for iOS/Android devices enables image transfer to a smartphone or tablet via easy wireless connection.

The 2200mAh high-capacity battery (DMW-BLK22) can be recharged either via AC or USB which is convenient if you are travelling and want to use a USB power bank. It also complies with USB PD (Power Delivery) when used with the optional LUMIX Battery Charger (DMW-BTC15). The current Battery Grip (DMW-BGS5) is compatible with the new cameras.

  1. The best lineup of full-frame lenses

The Panasonic LUMIX S Series boasts a total lineup of 14 lenses including the new LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 MACRO (S-R1428). Users can take advantage of the five-strong LUMIX F1.8 lens series which all feature the same exterior, and offer convenience by having the same filter size. Using lenses of a similar size, diameter and centre of gravity also makes it easy to switch between them when an S Series camera is mounted on a gimbal, for example. All these lenses have the same high-quality colour rendering, and bokeh performance. Covering virtually any framing and composition, use of these fixed focal length lenses ensures filmmaking with streamlined workflow and post-production.

LUMIX S Series lenses all feature linear motors with the option to change how the focus ring responds. For the non-linear setting, focus is shifted with a variable amount according to the rotation speed of the focus ring; while for linear setting focus is shifted with a designated amount according to the rotational quantum of the focus ring. Sensitivity (the amount of focus shift per rotational quantum) can be selected from 90 to 1080 degrees. With MF Assist, there is now the ability to enlarge the focus point to check critical focus while recording video[vii].

Furthermore, the L-Mount system provides the largest native lineup of full-frame lenses to choose from, with 61 lenses to date for a limitless spectrum of creative possibilities. The LUMIX S5II and S5IIX will also recognise the focal length of an analog lens such as anamorphic or other old lenses, and automatically use the in-body image stabiliser.

  1.  Even more with the LUMIX S5IIX

The LUMIX S5IIX has all of the remarkable features of the LUMIX S5II and more. it is the first full-frame mirrorless camera to record directly to an external SSD (solid-state drive) via USB-C, offering workflow and cost advantages. Professionals will also benefit from the inclusion of advanced video codecs such as All-Intra and ProRes. The camera is capable of RAW video output via HDMI supported by an external recorder.[viii] The GH5II’s streaming capabilities were well received, and are now introduced in the LUMIX S5IIX, with features including wired[ix]/wireless IP streaming and USB tethering – making this a perfect tool for the video/hybrid creator. New compact and lightweight Ultra Wide-Angle Zoom Lens with Macro capability: LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 MACRO (S-R1428GC)

LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens

Panasonic has announced the LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 MACRO, a new lightweight ultra wide-angle zoom lens to further grow the LUMIX S Series line-up.

The new lens joins the family of compact zoom lenses for the L-Mount system. They cover 14mm ultra wide-angle to 300mm telephoto for high performance video and stills shooting. The current range also includes the LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 MACRO (S-R1428), LUMIX S 20-60mm F3.5-5.6 (S-R2060) and the LUMIX S 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 MACRO O.I.S. (S-R70300).

The LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 MACRO weighs in at a compact 345 grams, while boasting impressive macro capability with a magnification of 0.25x (at 14mm) – 0.5x (at 28mm). The wide angle of view supports landscape shots and is also suitable for solo content creators filming themselves at arm’s length. A rugged dust/splash-resistant[i] design ensures reliable field use in challenging conditions and temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius. In addition, the front lens element has a fluorine coating to repel liquids such as water or oil. An ND/PL filter with 77mm diameter can be attached.

The new lens and the LUMIX S 20-60mm F3.5-5.6 lens feature a common overall length and positioning of controls. The similar size and centre of gravity makes it simple to switch between them when an S Series camera is mounted on a gimbal, for example.

The LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 MACRO is comprised of fourteen lens elements in ten groups including one aspherical ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lens, one aspherical lens, three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lenses and one UHR (Ultra High Refractive Index) lens. The use of aspherical lenses realises beautiful bokeh, while the ED lenses effectively suppress chromatic aberration.

The lens offers silent, high precision autofocus. Panasonic and ATCO Australia join forces to promote renewable energy through hydrogen initiative

Panasonic has announced a partnership with engineering, logistics and energy company ATCO Australia, trialling a new fuel cell that is being used to convert hydrogen to electricity.

The installation – at the ATCO Clean Energy Innovation Hub (CEIH) in Jandakot, Western Australia – is the first Australian test demonstration of the capabilities of Panasonic Hydrogen Fuel Cells, delivered at a time when the nation is accelerating its shift towards renewable forms of energy production. When established the CEIH was Australia’s first commercial scale, renewable hydrogen supply chain, a significant technological step towards reducing Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Russell James, General Manager for Hydrogen and Future Fuels at ATCO Australia said: “We are proud to have partnered with Panasonic in this innovative hydrogen initiative. The company’s knowhow, expertise and unique hydrogen fuel cell design allows us to efficiently convert hydrogen to electricity, contributing up to five kilowatts of power to our Jandakot maintenance workshops.”

How does it work?

Pure hydrogen from the CEIH’s pipeline is injected into the Panasonic hydrogen fuel cell, which converts it into electricity, and can also support co-generation, where the waste heat produced can be utilised for purposes such as heating water. The entire process is powered by renewable energy, resulting in zero carbon gas emissions being released into the atmosphere. The Panasonic hydrogen fuel cell produces up to five kilowatts of power and can scale this output by connecting and controlling multiple generator units to meet demand.

Panasonic has been producing residential fuel cells for Japanese (since 2009) and European markets (since 2014) and has subsequently sold around 220,000 units as of November 2022.  The commercial use, 5kW hydrogen fuel cell (“H2 KIBOU”), installed at CEIH, Jandakot, uses the same technology as a residential fuel cell, but uses pure hydrogen as a direct fuel source instead of natural gas.  In April 2022, these fuel cells supported the opening of the H2 KIBOU FIELD[1] demonstration facility in Kusatsu, Shiga, Japan, with the intention of powering site operations entirely by renewable resources in the future.

With this latest installation, Panasonic is proud to bolster its contribution to the global decarbonisation effort towards achieving a carbon-neutral society. In alignment with its long-term environmental vision of “Panasonic GREEN IMPACT”, the company will continue to find new ways to expand the adoption of renewable energy sources that include the full-scale use of hydrogen.

Paul Reid, Managing Director at Panasonic Australia said: “Since Panasonic was founded more than 100 years ago, we have constantly searched for ways to improve the quality of people’s lives, through the innovation, creation and development of technologies.”
“In recent years, this philosophy has evolved to consider how we can enrich the lives of future generations. Panasonic believes that hydrogen is an essential component in the journey towards net zero. Through this partnership with ATCO Australia, we’re excited to explore the vast potential of decarbonisation as a critical mechanism to create a more sustainable and secure energy future for Australians, and the world,” said Mr Reid.

Achieving a net zero goal requires companies to utilise all renewable energy sources available – including solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower and biomass. However, some of these forms of power generation have drawbacks, including large output variations depending on weather conditions and the lack of flexibility to adjust power generation to cope with demand.

Analysts from the European Commission[2] estimate that clean hydrogen could meet 24 per cent of the world’s energy needs by 2050, although it will take significant research and development from a number of industries to meet these ambitious targets.

Hydrogen is one of the most abundant substances on earth and can be used as thermal energy and electric power, through combustion and chemical reactions without emitting CO2 in the process. These fuel cells can produce the highest proportion of electricity of any combined heat and power technology as an adjustable and decentralised solution, reducing dependence on centrally generated power while saving carbon emissions, and potentially electricity costs.

Paul Reid reiterated that while this fuel cell is a test model, Panasonic will closely monitor its performance within the harsh Australian climate conditions and has plans to introduce a Hydrogen Fuel Cell optimised for the Australian market in the years ahead.

“We are also excited to investigate applications for Hydrogen Fuel Cells in various commercial and industrial settings including large-scale mining sites and remote micro-grids which currently rely on diesel.” said Mr Reid.

Panasonic adds to popular LUMIX S F1.8 Lens lineup: Compact, lightweight LUMIX S 18mm F1.8 (S-S18)

LUMIX S 18mm F1.8 LensPanasonic is pleased to introduce a new large-aperture wide fixed focal length LUMIX S Series lens, the 18mm F1.8 (S-S18). Following the 85mm, 50mm, 35mm and 24mm models, it is the fifth in the series of F1.8 large-aperture lenses based on the L-Mount system.

At a compact 340g, the LUMIX S-S18 is highly mobile and can be paired with the S5, LUMIX’s smallest full-frame model. The rugged dust/splash-resistant[i] design ensures reliable field use in challenging conditions and temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius.

This large-aperture lens delivers high optical performance for professional shooting, despite its compact size. The ultra-wide 18mm perspective offers impressive versatility at different shooting distances. The focal length supports landscapes, astrophotography and architecture shots and the lens can also be used for close-ups thanks to the 0.18m minimum focusing distance.

The five-strong LUMIX F1.8 lens series has a common positioning of controls for ease of use and a common barrel diameter that provides the convenience of using the same filters across lenses. Using lenses of a similar size, diameter and centre of gravity also makes it easy to switch between them when an S Series camera is mounted on a gimbal, for example. Covering virtually any framing and composition, use of these fixed focal length lenses ensures filmmaking with streamlined workflow and post-production.

The LUMIX S 18mm F1.8 is comprised of thirteen lens elements in twelve groups including three aspherical lenses, three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lenses, one UED (Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion) lens and one UHR (Ultra High Refractive Index) lens. The use of three aspherical lenses realises beautiful bokeh, a common advantage across the series, while the ED lenses effectively suppress chromatic aberration. The filter diameter is 67 mm, with a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

The LUMIX S 18mm F1.8 is compatible with the LUMIX sensor drive at 240fps to take advantage of high-speed, high-precision auto focusing. For the non-linear setting, focus is shifted with a variable amount according to the rotation speed of the focus ring; while for linear setting focus is shifted with a designated amount according to the rotational quantum of the focus ring. Sensitivity (the amount of focus shift per rotational quantum) can be selected from 90 to 360 degrees by 30-degree increments[ii].

The lens will be available in late October from leading photographic specialists.
