Panasonic LUMIX GH5S for the video professional: Introducing Dual Native ISO for impressive low-light performance

Panasonic has unveiled the LUMIX GH5S, a new addition to the G Series lineup with exceptional low-light performance for the professional videographer. The GH5S will be available in Australia in February 2018.

A companion model to the highly successful DC-GH5 hybrid digital single lens mirrorless camera, the GH5S incorporates a 10.2-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine with – in a first for LUMIX – Dual Native ISO technology delivering a maximum ISO of 51200.

Scott Mellish, Product Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic, said:

“Dual Native ISO was originally developed for Panasonic’s Varicam broadcast cameras. This capability has received critical acclaim from professional cinematographers who need to work creatively in challenging lighting conditions without compromise.

“We are very excited to see this technology become accessible to LUMIX G Series customers, who will enjoy the vibrancy and greater artistic latitude provided when shooting with the GH5S in low light situations.”

The GH5S offers a number of other capabilities that video specialists will appreciate. A slightly larger multi-aspect sensor provides sufficient margin to allow all aspect ratios to have the same angle of view – including Cinema 4K; 4K; Anamorphic 4:3 in video recording; and 4:3, 16:9 and 3:2 in photo shooting.

For situations where extreme slow-motion is required, the variable frame rate has been increased to up to 240 frames per second (fps) in Full HD (maximum 10x slower); and the GH5S also records overcranked / undercranked video in C4K/4K (60 fps, maximum 2.5x slower)i.

Other convenient features include V-Log L profile and LUT (Look Up Table) pre-installed in the camera, so users can immediately play videos recorded in V-Log L. The GH5S is also at home in the studio interfacing with other broadcast cameras thanks to its compatibility with Time Code IN/OUT. This is easy to set up using the flash sync terminal and bundled BNC converter cable.

The GH5S is further optimised to provide excellent autofocus in low-light environments, with -5EV luminance detection in Low Light AF. Live View Boost allows scenes to be electronically illuminated in almost total darkness to check accuracy in Live View before shooting; and to support this, the magnification ratio in MF Assist has been increased to 20x. Night Mode – which aids the photographer’s night vision – can be selected to put a red cast over the viewfinder and/or the LCD display.

Scott Mellish explained that the GH5S “would be ideal for a professional wedding videographer who uses a run and gun camera like the GH5 for daytime shoots, but also needs a tripod-mounted camera to capture speeches in low-light at the reception without any loss in quality.”

Other key features include 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 25/30p video recording to SD Cardii and 4K quality video at 50/60 fps in Cinema 4K (4096 x 2160)iii. The GH5S is built for the professional, incorporating a weather-sealed body, large-capacity batteries, dual UHS-II SD Card slots and convenient Bluetooth and Wi-fi connectivity.

Fast, skilful and sleek LUMIX G9: Delivering best-in class performance for the photo enthusiast

The Panasonic LUMIX G9 has been created to truly inspire the enthusiast photographer, with a stellar lineup of best-in-class features that deliver incredible responsiveness, stunning image quality, precise operability and outstanding mobility.

Panasonic continues to be the leading driver of innovation in the mirrorless category with the LUMIX G9. The camera delivers fastest-in-class burst shootingi at 20 fps (AFC) / 60 fps (AFS) in 20-megapixel resolution; introduces 6.5-stops compensation via enhanced, ultra-precise stabilisation technology (5-Axis Dual I.S. 2); and leads the industry with 80-megapixel High Resolution mode.

The G9 has breathtaking ergonomics. At 0.83x (35mm camera equivalent), the magnification ratio of the Live View Finder (LVF) is the largest in its classii. This OLED LVF display has a high 120 fps (frames per second) refresh rate with no blackoutiii, key to shooting high-speed action. A status LCD on top of the body – also largest-in-class – provides detailed settings at a glance. Travel photographers will appreciate the introduction of USB charging and operation on this model.

Photographers also benefit from features first seen on the LUMIX GH5 and still unique in their class – including 6K Photo Mode burst shooting with no buffer limit, supported by high-speed backup with Dual SD UHS-II Card slots.

Scott Mellish, Product Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic said:

“Enthusiasts looking to broaden their scope with a highly mobile camera designed for fast action photography in the wildlife and sports arena will appreciate the G9 – with high-performance features housed in a sleek, lightweight design. In addition, the camera’s unique 80-megapixel mode is a boon for landscape photographers wanting to create images with incredible detail.”

“The G9 takes the outstanding developments that debuted with the GH5 and adds new capabilities for specialised shooting never before seen in this class of camera.”

Key Capabilities

Powerful performance for field shooting

The LUMIX G9 is designed to capture the defining moment. It boasts outstanding performance with fastest-in-class burst shootingiv at 20 fps (AFC) / 60 fps (AFS) in 20-megapixel full resolution including RAW. A blackout-free LVFv means the user can continuously track and keep the subject in focus. Panasonic has also introduced a new Pre-burst shooting mode on the G9, so the camera commences shooting 0.4 seconds prior to shutter release, including when shooting in RAW.

Panasonic allows the photographer to make the most of these high-speed capabilities with 6K Photo, recording a burst of 18-megapixel still images continuously at 30 fps with no buffer limit. The camera also incorporates 4K Photo, capturing 60 fps in 8-megapixel resolution. In 6K/4K Photo, three modes can be selected depending on the situation: 6K/4K Burst, 6K/4K Burst (Start/Stop) and 6K/4K Pre-burst.

Contrast AF with DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology has been further advanced, with the G9 able to achieve an industry-leading AF of 0.04 secvi (approx.). The camera’s high processing performance also allows it to incorporate Deep Learning technology (in addition to the conventional Face/Eye Recognition) – which detects the human body and is intended for action and sports photography.

6.5-stops compensation with 5-Axis Dual I.S. 2

Panasonic’s Dual I.S. 2 technology combines 5-axis internal stabilisation with the optical image stabilisation in selected lensesvii. It has been enhanced in the G9 with a new algorithm, and can now support up to 6.5 stops of image stabilisationviii – enabling shooting still subjects handheld at much slower shutter speeds and ISO values. It even allows shooting at ultra-telephoto focal lengths handheld up to 800mmix (35mm equivalent), so photographers can capture amazing wildlife and landscape images.

The new algorithm precisely calculates shake information from the gyrosensor, image sensor and accelerometer sensor for highly accurate shake detection and compensation, in particular for low-frequency movement.

Magnificent picture quality with 80-megapixel High Resolution Mode

Panasonic has optimised the G9 sensor for magnificent photography. The new High Resolution mode produces an 80-megapixel equivalent (10368 x 7776 pixels) RAW and/or JPEG image by automatically taking and combining 8 consecutive images in-camera. Designed for tripod shooting – such as landscapes – this provides amazing ease, detail and flexibility, allowing photographers to create very detailed scenes and large prints from their images.

Scott Mellish added:

“With resolution like this generally seen only on medium format cameras that cost many times more than the G9, this will have great appeal when tripod shooting in the fields of landscape, architecture and product photography.”

At the heart of the camera, the 20-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor (without Low Pass Filter) and the high-precision Venus Engine processor – provide incredible detail, outstanding low-light performance and impressive dynamic range. The Venus Engine has a number of technologies that are designed to deliver a stunningly natural image. Multipixel Luminance Generation ensures that even the pixels on the edges of images are precise without false colours. Three-dimensional Colour Control balances hue, saturation and brightness for rich colour reproduction from dark to light. High Precision Multi Process Noise Reduction both identifies noise and preserves detail, supporting low-light shooting at ISO 25600.

A focus of innovation – Live View Finder with high speed and high magnification

The LVF was a key focus of Panasonic’s innovation when developing the new camera. It combines high speed and high magnification with carefully considered practical features – switchable magnification, Night Mode and AF Point Scope, designed to provide both comfort and excellent results in the field.

The LVF – with industry-leading approx. 0.83x magnification ratio and a 3,680K-dot OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display – has exceptional visibility. The fast refresh rate, free from blackout even in high speed burst shooting, is absolutely essential for action photography. The high-speed OLED technology delivers a smooth 120 fps display, a minimum time lag of less than 0.005 sec and an exceptional 10,000:1 high contrast ratio.

The magnification ratio can also be switched to 0.7x and 0.77x. No other mirrorless camera offers this, and it is an excellent feature for glasses-wearers, who can adjust the magnification in order to see the full frame.

Night Mode can be selected to put a red cast over the viewfinder and/or the LCD display. Red light does not affect the photographer’s vision when shooting night scenes and astrophotography, and does not disturb wildlife, making it easier to capture shots at night.

AF Point Scope is a brand new feature on the G9 for wildlife subjects. When shooting with a long telephoto lens with a shallow depth of field, confirming the correct focus point is crucial. While using autofocus, the user can now zoom in on the LVF or LCD screen, check the desired focus point in detail, and confidently take the shot.

Intuitive controls

A staple of pro-level cameras, the status LCD on top of the G9 body is the largest in its class. The LCD allows settings to be checked at a glance, convenient for tripod shooting. It can also be used at night instead of the rear monitor to reduce the light emitted from the camera.

The 3.0-inch 1040K-dot touch-control rear monitor includes Night Mode, has a 3:2 aspect ratio and uses a pixel structure of RGB (Red / Green / Blue) and White for high visibility in bright sunlight. It has a versatile 270-degree tilting design.

A convenient Fn lever at the bottom front of the camera allows users to assign a function such as ‘Night Mode’, and quickly flick the switch to activate when needed.

Designed for field use – rugged and mobile

The LUMIX G9 is highly mobile at 579 gramsx, while incorporating a rugged field-ready design. The camera has a magnesium alloy full diecast front/rear frame. Secure construction and sealing for every joint, dial, and button make the G9 not only splashxi and dust-proof but also freeze-proof down to -10 degrees Celsius.

Panasonic has introduced USB charging with the G9. The camera can not only be charged via USB, but can also be operated while running off a portable USB power bank, useful for time lapse shooting. For the action photographer that needs to backup data while shooting, the high-speed Dual SD UHS-II Card slots provide the flexibility and protection of simultaneous recording to both cards.

Field work is also streamlined with Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy connection and secure 5GHz Wi-Fi® (IEEE 802.11ac), providing convenient remote control and sharing with other devices, and faster data transmission.

Optional accessories – Battery Grip and Eyecup

The Battery Grip (DMW-BGG9) is weather sealed, enables a second battery to be used and replicates the main camera controls for portrait shooting convenience, including the joystick. An Eyecup (DMW-EC4) is available to block light falling on the viewfinder and for greater comfort.

This ultra-telephoto lens offers outstanding high speed and low light performance in a lightweight design. The lens achieves stunning results for action photography, while still attaining compact mobility at a 200mm focal length – unheard of in other camera systems. For even greater versatility, a bundled 1.4x Teleconverter extends focal length to 560mm (35mm equivalent).

Scott Mellish, Product Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic said: “The new H-ES200 lens is designed to be the perfect partner for the LUMIX G9. The F2.8 aperture is designed for low light shooting at dusk or dawn, while the 200mm focal length is a staple for sports and wildlife photography.”

The H-ES200 has a rugged dust and splash-proofi design for field use and is freeze-proof down to -10 degrees Celsius. The new lens, in stylish metallic black, will be available in Australia in January 2017, priced at $4299RRP from photographic specialists.

Key Features

The highly mobile lens supports handheld ultra-telephoto shooting. With its 400mm ultra-telephoto focal length and stunning descriptive performance, the H-ES200 is suitable for wildlife or sports photography. A 1.4x Teleconverter (DMW-TC14) is bundled with the lens; and the H-ES200 can also be used with the optional 2.0x Teleconverter (DMW-TC20) to extend focal length to 800mm (35mm equivalent).

The fast F2.8 aperture captures rapidly-moving subjects, while the Power OIS (Optical Image Stabiliser) compensates for hand-shake to enable shooting without a tripod and in low-light situations. For powerful stabilisation, the lens works with Dual I.S.ii (Image Stabiliser), and the Dual I.S. 2iii system when mounted on compatible Panasonic LUMIX DSLM cameras.

The lens incorporates 15 elements in 13 groups, including two UED (Ultra Extra-low Dispersion) lenses. These lenses and Panasonic’s cutting edge optical technology achieve high-resolution, high-contrast imaging from corner to corner while suppressing distortion and chromatic aberration.

Incorporating a triple linear motor system, the LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm / F2.8 / POWER OIS is compatible with the LUMIX G sensor drive at 240fps to take advantage of the high-speed, high-precision Depth From Defocus (DFD) focusing system. This stunning AF performance supports the precise focusing required for 4K video.

‘The show will go on’ with Panasonic PT-RZ21K laser projector

New 3-Chip DLP™ SOLID SHINE laser projector provides built-in redundancy and extended maintenance-free operation.

Panasonic is set to launch a new 20,000 lumens projector perfectly positioned for the rental and staging industry – the PT-RZ21K. Chris Maw, Product Marketing Manager, Media and Entertainment, Panasonic, said:

“The PT-RZ21K features a dual-laser 3-chip light source. This provides built-in redundancy and uninterrupted projection to ensure the show goes on should a laser diode fail. This removes the need for and cost of freighting a backup projector, making it perfect for high-profile, mission-critical applications.”

Set to be released in Australia in December, the PT-RZ21K is designed for rental, live entertainment, staging and any permanent fixed large venue and offers 20,000 hours maintenance-free operation. The projector is engineered to withstand continuous 24/7 operation, and because it is laser technology, without the need for lamp replacement, there is less picture degradation over time. These capabilities add up to a lower total cost of ownership for rental operators and other organisations.

Chris Maw added:

“This filter-free high brightness projector has the smallest footprint of any 20,000 lumen model on the market, at up to a third less volume than other competitors in its class. With a weight of under 50 kilos, this enables easier handling, reducing the use of heavy lifting equipment. Where angled multi-screen projection is required, 360-degree mounting flexibility puts laser ahead of lamp-based alternatives, and provides fresh visual effects in museums, public spaces, shopping centers, company showrooms, and similar locations.”

The new projector presents a laser alternative to the current PT-DZ21K, which is the current industry workhorse in the rental and staging market with over 50% market share worldwide in this space. All of Panasonic’s existing PT-DZ21K 3-Chip DLP™ lenses and frames will work with the PT-RZ21K, helping maximise the investment that rental companies have made in Panasonic.

Panasonic launches new Windows powered handheld Toughpad with barcode reader

Panasonic today announced the launch of its latest fully rugged handheld – the Toughpad FZ-F1 – in the Australian market. Powered by Windows 10 IoT Mobile Enterprise, the device offers further choice for customers following the release of its Android counterpart in the first half of this year.

The Toughpad FZ-F1 is one of the thinnest and most lightweight tablets in the 4.7” category and is intended to support those who are exposed to tough and high-risk work environments, due to its fully ruggedised design.

It has 3-in-1 capabilities combining a mobile barcode reader, phone and tablet into one device with a long-lasting battery that provides up to eight hours of continuous use, perfect for the mobile workforce.

The rear barcode reader allows users to scan items easily while the multi-touch display can be accessed even with gloves on, making the device ideal for transportation and logistics, manufacturing and retail industries. It is also well-suited for a wide variety of applications, such as inventory management, shipping and receiving, delivery routing and parcel tracking, and retail store queue busting.

With the average handheld tablet repair costing organisations over $AUD3,850 and 6 hours in lost time, many businesses are seeking out ruggedised technology to reduce IT costs and lost productivity associated with damaged devices, as well as increase efficiency and provide better service for customers.

Businesses are also mindful of staff health, such as Repetitive Strain Injury. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, around one third of workplace injuries in Australia are sprains or strains. The Toughpad FZ-F1 has been specifically designed to overcome these operational and health challenges.

Marc Amelung, General Manager, Mobile Solutions, Panasonic Australia, said:

“It’s no surprise that the rugged mobile market is expected to continue its steady growth – Australian companies are realising consumer-grade products do not provide the necessary value or sophistication required to address business needs. This has resulted in thousands being lost in repair costs and days being lost each year in productivity.

The FZ-F1 will help to slash field failure rates, raise productivity and reduce work-based injuries thanks to its innovative design. Panasonic has a strong 20 year heritage in the Toughbook category and we will continue to adapt and serve businesses with our tailored solutions.”

FZ-F1-handheld-phone-tablet-mobile-workforce

Toughpad FZ-F1 purpose built features:

  • Angled barcode reader – The ergonomically designed, angled rear barcode reader allows the user to scan items without bending at the elbow or wrist while also being able to clearly read the screen. This purpose-built feature was designed to improve productivity and reduce the potential for repetitive strain injuries.
  • Full outdoor functionality – The Toughpad FZ-F1 has a daylight readable display and is built to withstand a 1.8 metre drop on concrete, and it even works with a wet screen or with gloves on. The device is fully sealed against dust and is submersible in 100cm of water for 30 minutes, meeting IP65 and IP68 certification requirements, plus it can withstand temperatures from below -100C to above +500C.
  • Windows 10 IoT Mobile Enterprise – As the world’s lightest fully rugged handheld tablet, this 4.7” Windows device features a quad-core Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ processor, delivering industry leading performance along with a purpose-built design and rugged credentials that live up to the brand’s heritage. The Panasonic FZ-F1 also gives companies the ability to develop in an open environment with thousands of enterprise grade applications at workers’ fingertips.
  • 4G phone connectivity – The FZ-F1 is a full multi-carrier Band 28 4G LTE phone with dual SIM card support and up to 630 hours standby time. It comes with 100 decibel speakers with noise suppression and triple noise-cancelling microphones.
  • Military-certified toughness – It can operate in a wide range of environments and has passed a torturous tumble test that saw the device endure 2,000 consecutive one metre drops – so it can stand up to the trials of the most demanding enterprise and government usage environments.
  • High capacity warm swappable battery – The tablet can operate beyond a typical eight-hour work shift on the standard, field replaceable battery, and with an optional extended life battery it can go well beyond two full work shifts. For times when a battery change is necessary during work hours, it can be accomplished while keeping the device operational. And when more power is needed, the quick charge capability delivers extended use after a one hour charge, with a full charge averaging only two hours.
  • Versatile optional accessories – A broad selection of accessories will be available for the Toughpad FZ-F1, including vehicle docks, hand strap, single and multiple device cradles, multi-battery and multi device chargers, passive and active stylus options and an extended life battery.

Key specifications

The handheld tablet will be available with dual SIM slots and certified on leading mobile carrier networks, providing 4G LTE/3G/GPRS/CDMA2000 mobile broadband for voice (or VoIP) and data. To ensure clear voice communications above industrial noise, the device is equipped with intelligent noise suppression capabilities and dual front speakers providing an astounding maximum volume of 100 decibels. Panasonic announces LUMIX DC-GH5 Firmware Update Service Ver.2.0 for exceptional enhancement of performance and functions

Panasonic has announced a new firmware update program Ver.2.0 for the LUMIX DC-GH5 to further enhance the camera’s performance. Interviewing front-line photographers and cinematographers worldwide after they had used the GH5, Panasonic investigated what was needed in the field and provided the functions that were strongly demanded. This enhancement is not just a firmware update, but an exceptional upgrade of camera performance to satisfy professional GH5 users.

The firmware will be released at the end of September at http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/

Doug Campbell, Category Manager AV and Imaging, Panasonic, said: “At the launch of the GH5, we announced further key updates to come. Not only are we delivering on this functionality, but we have also added a number of other major improvements via this firmware release that we’re sure will satisfy our key GH5 customers. These videographers and photographers won’t need to wait for the next camera generation to see their feedback realised. They are able to update their GH5 with new functionality from tethered shooting to 18-megapixel Anamorphic video – giving them even greater scope and performance as a working professional.”

As announced, the camera will offer compatibility with 400-Mbps 4:2:2 10-bit ALL-Intra video recording in 4K 30p/25p/24p and Full-HD; high-resolution video recording in Anamorphic mode; 4K Hybrid Gamma Profile compatible with 4K HDR television; and USB tethering.

The new firmware includes the following upgrades:

1. Compatibility with “LUMIX Tether” PC software

  • When the K (Kelvin) value was changed after adjusting the color temperature with 2-axis white balance compensation, the setting was reset. This has been corrected.

9. Improved usability of Time Lapse Shot

  • The remaining shooting time and the number of recordable pictures are displayed on the stand-by screen.

10. Improved usability of Power Save LVF

  • Power Save LVF can now be used during all stand-by display options.

11. Wireless functions

  • A new Bluetooth Remote Control function has been added to Panasonic’s Image App. Users can now operate the shutter, video and bulb functionality remotely without wi-fi, which saves both time and battery power when there is no need to transfer images. The Image App will be updated at the same time as the GH5 firmware release.
  • When using ‘Auto Transfer’, the GH5 will now automatically resume image transfer in situations where the camera is powered off and restarted.
