Panasonic reveals advanced compact camera for creative photographers: LUMIX DMC-LX10

Amazing capability in a streamlined body with fast LEICA F1.4-2.8 aperture lens, 1-inch MOS sensor, and powerful 4K capabilities

Panasonic has revealed the latest creative compact in the acclaimed LX Series line – the LUMIX DMC-LX10. This camera is designed for stunning imaging and powerful video, featuring an exceptional F1.4 high-speed lens, large 1-inch MOS sensor and 4K Photo and Video in a sleek, pocket-sized frame.

Doug Campbell, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic, said: “This seventh-generation of the LX Series is true to the philosophy of providing cameras that meet exacting creative requirements. The fast, bright lens is a leap forward for the range, and supports stunning shots with intricate detail, even in low light. In addition, the LX10 takes advantage of our latest 4K capabilities – 4K Video and the tiltable touch monitor will appeal to vloggers who want to put themselves in the frame.”

Key Features

The quality of the lens, sensor and AF technologies, coupled with Panasonic’s latest 4K features, set a new benchmark for the LX Series.

The DMC-LX10 is stylish, small and capable, making it ideal as a pocketable camera to capture impressive images and video on the fly. Adding to its versatility is a 180-degree tiltable 1,040k-dot touch control rear monitor, designed to be flipped up for shooting dynamic video blogs, capturing selfies or for low-angle photography. The camera offers 4K Photo, 4K Video and Panasonic’s very latest 4K capabilities including 4K Live Cropping and Light Composition, as well as Post Focus with Focus Stacking.

4K technologies

The LUMIX DMC-LX10 captures smooth 4K video in 3840 x 2160 at 30p/25p (50Hz) or 24p in MP4. Easy to use 4K Live Cropping offers stable panning and zooming during recording.

4K Photo with 4K Pre-Burst mode shoots 30 frames per second before and after the shutter is released to capture that precise moment. Convenient ‘Batch Save’ stores an entire Burst sequence of up to 150 frames at just one press of a button. ‘Light Composition’ mode saves the brightest pixels from a series of shots in-camera, for vibrant and colorful images of night scenes such as fireworks.

Panasonic has upgraded its Post Focus feature to include Focus Stacking, which allows the user to refocus their shot after they’ve taken it, or combine focus points to achieve complete foreground to background focus.

5-Axis HYBRID O.I.S.+ (Optical Image Stabiliser Plus) suppresses handshake in virtually any direction for stable video shooting, while POWER OIS supports steady stills photography.

Outstanding imaging and responsiveness

The LEICA DC-VARIO SUMMILUX lens has a fast F1.4-2.8 aperture (35mm camera equivalent: 24-72mm) with an aperture ring that allows direct, intuitive control. Stunning macro shots with intricate detail can be taken at a minimum distance of 3 cm. Coupled with the 1-inch MOS sensor, the rich amount of light produces impressive defocusing for portraits with a shallow depth of field.

The camera has a compact lens design, with 11 elements in 9 groups, including 6 dual-sided aspherical lenses and low-dispersion lenses that achieve high-speed F1.4 and precise imaging. The 9-blade aperture diaphragm produces bokeh with a smooth, circular shape.

The DMC-LX10 is designed to be ultra-responsive, featuring Panasonic’s AF with Depth from Defocus technology, with high speed autofocusing performance of approx. 0.12 sec, and burst shooting at up to 10 fps (AFS) / 6 fps (AFC). Touch focus and touch shutter allow even greater finesse.

Other key features:

  • Exposure, white balance, focus and aperture bracketing
  • RAW images can be developed in-camera
  • Creative control with 22 filter options that can be applied in P/A/S/M mode. Includes ‘Creative Panorama’ with 18 filter effects and ‘Photo Style’ textures with a Monochrome filter.
  • High Speed Video records subjects with fast motion at 120fps/100fps 50Hz/FHD.Time Lapse and Stop Motion Animation are also available.
  • Wi-fi connectivity using the Panasonic Image App
  • AC or USB battery charging

The DMC-LX10 is priced at $999rrp and will be available in Australia in November from photographic specialists and consumer electronics retailers.

Panasonic releases weather-sealed LUMIX DMC-G85 camera designed for the field photographer

Suite of features includes rock-steady shooting with 5-Axis Dual IS 2, weatherproof design, latest 4K Photo and Video functions, and Post Focus with Focus Stacking

The LUMIX DMC-G85 is the latest member of the LUMIX G Series mirrorless family. Designed for field photography, the camera’s weather-sealed splash and dustproof design protects all joints, dials and buttons against extreme conditions.

A high-quality magnesium-alloy full diecast front frame ensures the compact body is both rugged and lightweight, while the optional rugged battery grip supports extended shooting, doubling battery life, and has an improved ergonomic design with easy access to main controls in portrait orientation.

Panasonic has further strengthened the camera with 5-Axis Dual IS 2 for excellent stability in a range of situations. A new high-precision gyrosensor joins the Dual IS system of 5-axis in-body stabilisation and 2-axis optical stabilisation in the lens. This makes it possible to use up to five stops slower shutter speed at a focal length of up to 280 mm, an amazing feat that is available in both photo and video. Zoom in on landmarks and achieve sharp shots of distant subjects at low ISO; and experience Steadicam-like performance when capturing video, even at telephoto focal length.

The new electromagnetically-driven shutter is quiet and reduces shutter-induced vibration for excellent sharpness – delivering speeds from 60 sec to 1/4000 sec – backed by the camera’s solid magnesium frame. An electronic first-curtain shutter can be used for shooting at up to 1/2000 sec, ideal for use in situations when a slight, pixel level of vibration matters – such as serious landscape photography.

Ensuring precise focus, the OLED Live View Finder (2360K-dot) has an increased magnification of 0.74x (35mm camera equivalent). The high-speed OLED technology delivers a time lag of less than 0.01 sec and exceptional 10,000:1 contrast ratio. An eyepoint distance of 20mm improves visibility for glasses wearers. Conveniently, a new LVF power saving mode dramatically increases battery life from around 320 to up to 800 images per charge by detecting when the eye moves away from the viewfinder and powering down, with a selectable delay time of 3, 5 or 10 seconds.

For enhanced resolution and detail, the camera’s 16 Megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor has the Low Pass Filter removed, and the Venus Engine Processor minimises moiré. The Venus Engine also has enhanced capabilities for tracking fast-moving subjects, which prevents out-of-focus shots in these situations. The new AF Sensitivity mode lets the user set tracking sensitivity according to the shooting requirement.

Panasonic has upgraded its Post Focus feature to include Focus Stacking, which allows the user to refocus their shot after they’ve taken it, or combine focus points to achieve complete foreground to background focus.

Focus-Stacking

Focus Stacking

4K Video has four times the resolution of Full HD at 3840 x 2160. New versatile frame rate options include 30p, 25p, 24p in 4K and 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p in Full HD. The camera also provides real-time image output to an external monitor in 4:2:2/8-bit via an optional micro HDMI cable while simultaneously recording video to the SD Card. Easy to use 4K Live Cropping offers stable panning and zooming during recording.

4K Photo with 4K Pre-Burst mode shoots 30 frames per second before and after the shutter is released to capture the defining shot even in the most challenging situations. New ‘Batch Save’ stores an entire Burst sequence of up to 150 frames at just one press of a button. The latest ‘Light Composition’ mode saves the brightest pixels from a series of shots in-camera, to produce more dramatic images of night scenes such as fireworks.

Advanced bracketing modes include focus, aperture, exposure and white balance bracketing. Focus bracketing allows the user to capture up to 999 shots at different focus points with just one shutter press – ideal for shooters who want maximum image quality and the ability to stack focus in post-production. With aperture bracketing, at a single press, photographers can quickly capture multiple shots at varying depth of field with the option of 3 shots, 5 shots or all apertures. When shooting with shallow focus it can be challenging to quickly decide on the optimum amount of focus that’s best for a shot, so this feature provides the security of alternative choices.

Doug Campbell, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic, said: “The camera’s rugged design lets photographers get on with the job with confidence, while ultra-stable shooting is vital for zoom or long exposure situations. Photographers who have experienced 4K have told us it is an invaluable tool, and we’ve improved on it in this model with new options. When creating the G85, LUMIX considered that photographers in the field need a camera that meets their particular challenges. With the advances in mirrorless technology, growing consumer demand in the category, expansion of the lens range and the compact form factor, it’s an ideal time to introduce a model like this.”

Other key features:

  • Contrast AF with Depth from Defocus technology offering high speed AF of approx. 0.07 sec
  • High-speed burst shooting now at up to 9 fps (AFS) / 6 fps (AFC) / ( with a buffer of up to 300 (JPEG) / 45 (RAW) images

Panasonic Develops the World’s First*1 4K 60p/50p Video Recording Digital Single Lens Mirrorless Camera: LUMIX GH5 Featuring ‘6K PHOTO’ *2

Panasonic today announced that it has developed a new Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) Camera – the LUMIX GH5 – that is capable of recording smooth, high-precision 4K 60p/50p or faithful 4:2:2 10-bit 4K 30p video*3 for the first time in the world*1. It also features ‘6K PHOTO’*2 which extracts approx.18-megapixel still images from ultra high-quality video with approx. 9 times the pixel count of Full-HD.

The new LUMIX GH5 is scheduled for commercialisation and introduction to the global market in early 2017.

Panasonic has been committed to the development of innovative digital cameras under the theme “Create a new photo culture in the digital era” The world’s first Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera, the DMC-G1, was introduced in 2008*4 and the subsequent DMC-GH1 achieved the world’s first Full HD video recording in 2009*5.

In 2014, Panasonic introduced the DMC-GH4, which realised 4K 30p/25p video recording for the first time in the industry*6. At the same time, Panasonic proposed a new and unique method of photography called ‘4K PHOTO’ which allows users to capture fleeting photographic moments – that even the eye cannot follow – in 4K resolution at 30 fps.

As a result, the DMC-GH4 is highly acclaimed for its exceptional performance in both photography and videography by a wide range of professional users worldwide – not only photographers but also cinematographers in the film production field, as well as emerging photo/video-hybrid creators.

By advancing Panasonic technologies, such as digital signal processing and heat dissipation, and packing them into the compact, lightweight body of a Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera, the LUMIX GH5 enables 4K 60p/50p or 4:2:2 10-bit 4K 30p video recording*3, both of which have never before been achieved in a DSLM camera*1. With this unprecedented video recording performance, Panasonic aims to further capitalise on the strength that it has achieved in the film production industry.

In the LUMIX GH5, the conventional ‘4K PHOTO’ function is dramatically advanced to form ‘6K PHOTO’*2 which lets the user cut a still image out of ultra high-quality approx.18-megapixel video with approx. nine times the pixel count of Full-HD. Taking advantage of its high-speed, long-time burst shooting capability, spur-of-the-moment shots can be saved as beautiful photos with higher resolution that complies with larger-sized printing by substantially increasing the resolution from approx. 8-megapixel (4K PHOTO) to approx.18-megapixel (6K PHOTO*2). Furthermore, approx. 8-megapixel 4K Photo images can be captured at 60 fps.

The LUMIX GH5 goes on show at Photokina 2016, which will be held at Koelnmesse, Germany, through 20-25 September, together with the new LEICA DG VARIO-ELMARIT F2.8-4.0 Lens Series. Achieving both high optical performance and a compact size, the LEICA DG VARIO-ELMARIT F2.8-4.0 Lens Series includes a new 12-60mm standard zoom lens, 8-18mm wide zoom lens and 50-200mm telephoto zoom lens that will be showcased as a reference exhibit at the Panasonic booth.

The latest information on LUMIX GH5 will be updated at the following web page: http://www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/lumix/gh5.

New 24mm wide-angle LEICA DICOMAR lens with 20x optical zoom
The newly developed HC-X1 lens system incorporates an impressive wide-angle 24mm lens (35mm equivalent). This allows low-distortion, wide-angle shooting without the use of a wide conversion lens. The lens and sensor design allow the HC-X1 to provide 20x optical zoom in a very compact and lightweight body. The 4-Drive Lens System individually drives each of the four lens groups for quick zooming between wide and telephoto.

VERSATILE FUNCTIONS FOR EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE

Designed to support professional camera work
The HC-X1 lens barrel features Triple Manual Rings for quick zoom, focus and iris operation. There are 13 customisable buttons, nine on the body and four on the LCD touch screen, which can be assigned to different functions to improve workflow.

The 3.5-inch monitor built into the camcorder handle can be pulled out and turned vertically 270 degrees for easy high or low-angle shooting, and the tilting approx. 1.77 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder is perfect for precise framing or when shooting in low lighting.

For shooting video outdoors or in bright light, there is a built-in variable ND filter with 1/4, 1/16 or 1/64 settings. For professionals who need more control, Gain and White Balance settings can be changed in camera and the HC-X1 is also equipped with a wealth of manual focus assist functions, such as MF Assist, One-Push AF, Expand/Peak, Focus Transition and Focus Area selection.

Professional interfaces for smooth system operation
The HC-X1 is equipped with two XLR audio input channels with switchable +48V phantom power and manual volume controls, allowing the use of professional microphones to record high-quality sound in either 16-bit linear PCM when shooting MOV/MP4 video, or Dolby Digital audio when shooting AVCHD video.

When mounted with the optional AJ-WM30E wireless module (sold separately), the HC-X1 can be remotely controlled with an iPad and the Panasonic AG-ROP app – offering even greater flexibility when shooting solo projects or working in teams. The HC-X1 is designed to support commercial video production, with features including a wired remote terminal, OSD level meter, 1-kHz test tone output and headphone output (3.5mm stereo mini jack).

Dual SD Card Slots for continuous and flexible recording
The HC-X1 has two SD Card slots to suit various recording scenarios depending on the user’s workflow or project requirements.

  • Unlimited Relay Recording: Video can be continuously recorded by hot swapping SD cards. When the SD card in one slot reaches capacity, the camera will automatically switch to the other card, allowing users to exchange the full card with a new one while continuing to shoot.
  • Simultaneous Recording: The same data is recorded simultaneously onto two cards, as backup against data loss.
  • Background Recording: The SD card in Slot 2 can be set to record continuously while the SD card in Slot 1 will only record video when the REC button is pressed.
  • Dual Codec Recording: Video can be recorded in different formats – for example, 4K video to Slot 1 and Full HD to Slot 2. This improves workflow for users who need to edit videos quickly or want to use the same video for different applications.

Image Adjustment Functions

  • 8-Mode Gamma: The user can select from seven Gamma settings including two types of CINE-LIKE gamma, to achieve the most suitable gradation.
  • 16-Axis Independent Color Correction Function: Allows color matching of multiple cameras as well as creative image rendering.
  • Master Detail: Adjusts the overall degree of contour enhancement.
  • Scene File: Six sets of image quality settings are preset in scene files. Parameters in each set can be changed flexibly. One set can be saved in camera, and up to eight sets can be stored on an SD memory card.

5-Axis HYBRID O.I.S. + for Full HD
5-Axis HYBRID O.I.S. + combines electronic image stabilisation with optical image stabilisation to suppress blur, including roll rotation.

High-speed, high-precision Intelligent AF
The Micro Drive Focus Unit has achieved stable and high-speed AF with excellent tracking performance to ensure accurate focusing, which is extremely important in 4K shooting. The AF operation settings are customisable including adjustments for speed, tracking sensitivity and area width.

Super Slow Motion and VFR
The Super Slow Motion function records HD images at a high speed of 120 frames per second (fps) (60 Hz)/100 fps (50 Hz) to provide a slow-motion effect. The HC-X1 has a new VFR (variable frame rate) recording function that can be set in ten steps from 2 to 60 fps. This lets the user produce creative and expressive videos using techniques such as overcranking for a slow-motion effect and undercranking for a quick-motion effect.

LCD/EVF displays to assist shooting

  • Waveform and Vectorscope Display: WAVE (Waveform) and VECTOR (Vectorscope) can be easily displayed on a subscreen of the LCD monitor.
  • ZEBRA: Two zebra patterns are built in. The level can be changed from 50% to 105% in 5% steps.
  • Marker (Y Level): The brightness level in the center of the image is displayed as a percentage.
  • Level Gauge: Horizontal or vertical tilting of the camcorder can be checked on the LCD and viewfinder.
  • Safety Zone Marker and Centre Marker display.
